Hedgehogs aren't that unusual pets in the US by now, there is one, I think african species that works well enough as a pet.

Would be illegal here too, but that doesn't say much about sensibleness of some laws.

Hedgehogs is legal, in some places. It’s often the african pygme breed that’s accepted. Not the common one you see in the wild at your place.

Here in sweden a hedgehog have to have 20 sq m as a living space, at least every where I’ve read. That’s bigger than my first appartment I had. I’ve done my research and the law maybe have changed since last time I read it. I often do research about animals before I get one.

So they often reccomend to have them free roaming in sweden. I would totally get one but the temperature in my house is too cold for a hedgehog, even my bunnies with fur find the indoor temperature a bit cold sometimes. So I’m just going with seeing wild hedgehog in nature 😊

Because I don’t have the space to follow the law for a hedgehog living space. They have better living space than bunnies. So I hope they will change the bunnies rules.

Free roaming hedge hogs? Now I wish they would make it legal here.

Hedgehog pets in the US are typically African Pygmy Hedgehogs. They need to have a setup with a CHE as they cannot take temperature below 72 F. They need to stay warm!

They also love to run on a wheel and poo (& pee) on it at the same time! They are nocturnal. They need to be housed single.

Some can be extremely shy and they need to be handled frequently to remain tame.

Oh... I should add that they are indeed illegal in some states.

Here are some photos of mine:

Just looked it up - much to my surprise those hedgehogs would be legal pets here, not that I would ever consider it, but interesting anyway.

It is legal to own pet hedgehogs in the U.K. - we have some wild ones in our garden, they’re really friendly and keep coming up to us.
Quote from the rspca website:
‘Unfortunately, It's currently legal to own an African pygmy hedgehog as a pet...’

The wild hedgehogs in the UK seem quite different in appearance to me than the African Pygmy hedgehogs (aside from coloring as that can vary greatly among African Pygmy hogs). I saw that their population has been decreasing there in the UK. :(

In the US, one has to be licensed with the USDA to breed hedgehogs. So the pets here are bred for pets (not taken from the wild). It isn't always easy to find a breeder. One breeder's site said their buyers travel an average of 2.5 hours to get to them.
