1) where did you get your rabbit?
Ookpik - From the local pet store, she'd been returned for growing "too big."
Newt - I adopted from SARS BC, he was born into the rescue.

2) were there any challenges you blame on how you got your rabbit (like health issues from a pet store)?
Ookpik - Nope, she's a perfect curmudgeon...
Newt - Nope, he's very social and easy going, he was very well socialized during is time in SARS's care.

3) If you were to get another rabbit, how would you do it?
I'd probably buy another from the pet store or get a rehome from the paper. I do support rescue, but living so far away, it's a challenge to actually adopt from one. To pick up Newt, we had to drive just over 1,200 km (one way) to Terrace. But if I was ready for another rabbit and there was one in our local shelter, I'd adopt it in a heartbeat, there's just rarely any there.

Goobie, Woody, Maddie, Molly and Bono - all came from different shelters. Goobie was two months old and was turned by someone who claimed they found her in their front yard. Woody was turned into the shelter due a divorce. Maddie and Molly were strays. Bono was turned in by his owner because she could not care for him. Bono is also blind.

Max and Elby - craigslist. Max was rescued from a basement by a kind soul. She could not keep him so I took him in. Elby I got from someone who no longer wanted him due to "allergies".

Willie - For Bunny Sake rescue. Willie was a former foster.

I would adopt only from a rescue or shelter. I see too many craigslist rejects. Makes me too sad.

1) where did you get your rabbit

I got Lily from a local non-profit rabbit rescue.

2) were there any challenges you blame on how you got your rabbit (like health issues from a pet store)?

During her spay surgery the vet found cancerous cysts in the wall of her uterus. Luckily they had not penetrated. She has no other healthy issues that I am aware of. Lily is a bit timid and shy and does not like to be handled, held in place, or picked up. She was abandoned in a decrepit hutch and had sore hocks. It was pretty clear that she had been an Easter present last year that someone got tired of 6 months later and dumped at the shelter. Luckily she was rescued by the rabbit rescue. Robin did an amazing job socializing Lily and teaching her that humans can be kind. But she is still a bit skittish if she thinks you're going to grab her or pick her up.

3) If you were to get another rabbit, how would you do it?

I would definitely either rescue or get a baby from a reputable breeder. It would be nice to see a rabbit grow up and teach it from the beginning that humans can be kind. But there are so many homeless bunnies in the world that I don't think I could talk myself into buying a baby. I'd rather save one that's had a crummy life. I would never, ever buy one from a store! I don't like to promote the selling of animals in pet shops.

Tony
1) a rescue group in IL that deals mostly with cats and dogs, but has a few rabbits
2) no health concerns so far. He's a bit under socialized, which may be due to spending a part of his young life in a cage at a rescue that didn't know how to handle rabbits.
3) absolutely I'd adopt form them again

Muffin
1) Humane Society here
2) Came to me with malnutrition issues due to her previous owner not taking good care of her. She had lines in her teeth and nails from inconsistent feeding. The teeth kinda rotted a bit but once the bad part grew out she was fine. Her condition was weird too--poor flesh condition--skinny in areas, fat in others. She was a doozy behaviorally--totally afraid of hands. It took 6 mo for her to trust me.
3) Absolutely I'd adopt from them again

Benjamin
1) rescue group in IN. We saw him on petfinder and had to have him, no matter the drive. They were a mostly small-animal and rabbit rescue, not a cat or dog rescue.
2) We had to have him neutered. There were some initial digestive issues because the rescue group couldn't get him to eat anything but the "lucky charms" style pellets, but once we got him on a good pellet, only occasional gas. No other health or behavioral concerns
3) Absolutely yes

Frida
1) Humane Society here
2) no health issues, but plenty of behavioral. She was spayed at around age 3, which means she had female hormones for a larger period of her life, and this makes her pretty territorial. Plus she was found as a stray so she had to fight for territory in the wild. She's not easy to handle but she's warming up slowly.
3) absolutely yes

I want to add that Tony has only slight mismarks for a Dutch, so he is probably a purebreed, a breeder's unwanted bunny because his markings aren't perfect. Muffin is definitely a mix, but she has a tattoo so she was at least part of the show rabbit world somewhere. She could also just be a Holland with some ear control, and not as much of a mutt as I thought. Ben is a perfect little dwarf with tattoo, and honestly he's probably show quality. Frida was probably a brood doe--she's a nethie without the dwarfing gene, called a Big Ugly Doe (or Buck), often used in breeding because they don't have peanuts. She is also tattooed. They all are also not yet middle age so a lot of the issues associated with their breeds just may not have had a chance to develop yet.

I got Leon and Evie from a breeder. They were quite cheap, quite well socialised and healthy.

My rabbit before them, Dylan, I got from a pet shop. There were no problems with her. But I'm not buying any more from pet shops, since I bought two guinea pigs in pet shops and one was pregnant, one had mange, and neither were tame. :(

1) Got mine at Pet Supermarket

2) No health problems for a good 8 years. I just had to get his teeth trimmed, and he's having issues w/ dehydration and being underweight, but those are probably just from age.

3) If I were to get another rabbit, I would do it through a local rescue. As of now I really don't have space or time for another rabbit in my life, but if Shadow does decide to go, I might look into fostering one for a bit. As a student who's constantly on the go for internships and stuff, it's just hard to take care of a pet that shouldn't travel much.

Pebbles

1) Pebbles was given to me by a local Vet, who was suppose to put Pebbles down. Pebbles was a baby (5 months old) and pregnant from a pet shop.

2) Pebbles had bouts of Head Tilt, sneezing, and an upper respiratory infection.

Bebe

1) Bebe was given to me by a friend who couldn't keep her anymore.

2) No problems, but I had her spayed when I got her.

3) That would depend.
I fostered 4 bunnies for the Humane Society, and I seem to know all the bunnies at the shelter (I volunteer there). So that is a good possibility I would get a bunny from them.
Then I know many breeders and friends who have rabbits, so I could get rabbits from them, if they can't keep their rabbits anymore.

My first rabbit, Chili, came from Pet Supermarket and unfortunately died right after. According to the pet store, they had been receiving many sick rabbits from the breeder.

Norah, however, was healthy as ever. I got her from the same pet store and she is perfectly healthy and friendly!

1.) I got my rabbit from a local breeder, he is a great pet and show rabbit.
2.) There are no health problems, i really like this breeder and think that the breeder did a great job.
3.) I would like to try to adopt or find a new breeder

1) where did you get your rabbit: Pet shop
2) were there any challenges you blame on how you got your rabbit (like health issues from a pet store)? Nope, none
3) If you were to get another rabbit, how would you do it? Definitley rescue!

i got butsy at a pet store. my parents split up so my mom thought i would cheer up ( she was right ) . i bought toots, and she was sick . so we brought her back and got butsy . no problems yet, he took a long time to trust tho.

Nick and Amelia
I adopted them from my local HRS chapter. They had been in foster care for a whole year. Nick has a very sensitive digestive system, and the slightest imbalance in his diet can lead to excess cecals or gas. I wonder if he was taken from his mother too early, but there's no way for me to know. Amelia is a bit chubby, but otherwise healthy.

Tobi
I took her in, again from HRS, when the person who adopted her returned her after a month. (Her foster space had been filled by another bunny.) She is a bit cage-aggressive, which I suspect could be from being shuffled around a lot when she was young. (Fair prize; dumped at shelter; rescued; adopted out; returned; taken in by me; all within 4 months, she just under a year old when I took her.)

Benjamin
I got Benjamin from a local kill-shelter, the day before he was scheduled to be PTS, again via HRS. He seems to have some issues with trust and/or depression. He was 3 yrs old when his original family dumped him at the shelter, but was already neutered, so probably came from PetCo.

I will adopt again. If I can find a girl that Benjamin likes, I would bring her home in a minute. I know the pet store bunnies need homes too, but as a volunteer with HRS, I see so many bunnies come into the rescue and the shelters, so adoption is really my first choice.

Lumi and Nilla(RIP)
1. Animal shelter
2. They told me Nilla and Lumi were both girls. Nilla turned out to be a boy so I ended up having to pay for an emergency spay for Lumi then a neuter for Nilla short time after. Nilla died unexpectedly 3 months later. Still not sure what he died of and was too poor for a necropsy at the time.
3. I don't think I'll go through the shelter again though I do love Lumi and don't regret getting her at all.

Lilith and Chubbs
1. Breeder
2. She bred for temperament, not so much for health. We spent a lot of money at the vets on various things.
3. We will go with a breeder but we definitely wont go with her.

Princess
1. Lady saved her from bad situation but couldn't keep her.
2. Oh holy the temperament of neglected animals. Princess was a PITA till the day she died. I had to wear gloves when giving her new food and water.
3. It was a rescue situation on my part, wasn't looking to add to the family. I would rescue again though.

I got my rabbit from a breeder at a reptile show. I go to reptile shows every month. People frequently sell small animals at reptile shows such as sugar gliders, possums, hedge hogs, etc.

This was the first time I saw rabbits being sold and it was the breeder's first time trying to sell at a reptile show. Arwen came from a line of winning show rabbits. She was very healthy when I got her.

If I were to get another rabbit, I would either buy from a breeder or adopt. I rarely buy pets from a pet store.

I got Basil from a pet store. He was just so adorable I couldn't say no! I have only had him about 4 months and no problems yet! If I were to get another it would probably be a CL rescue or a breeder.

I got both of my buns from animal shelters, which I personally think is the best deal. They came spayed/neutered for just $25! (The price has since gone up)
Since both of my buns were adults when they arrived at the shelter, we don't know how old they are, and I really would like to know, not only for just personal interest, but also to help me keep track of issues.
If I were to get another rabbit, I'd definitely return to my shelter.

Balth is from a someone who had some young rabbits that I found on Craigslist. It was a little sketchy driving over alone to somebody's house I had hardly talked to before, but it turned out just fine. Balthazar is in great health so far. For my next rabbit, I will definitely try a rabbit rescue.

I got Hershey at a pet store. He was a just a baby and very lonely. He was/is healthy and a sweety! If I got another rabbit it would be from a rescue. ( I had to say that or christinelea1 would kill me! lol!)

1) where did you get your rabbit
Pet shop
2) were there any challenges you blame on how you got your rabbit (like health issues from a pet store)?
She wasn't handled often, so she has problems with people (including me) so.. thats it.
3) If you were to get another rabbit, how would you do it?
I'd want a flemmie, so a breeder probably.

I got both my buns from the local humane society.

Pancake was hilarious. About a month later I got Riley and he looooooooooooved Pancake (physically). Pancake wasn't so thrilled about that though.

Riley was difficult largely due to his hormones. He could be too aggressive and bite Pancake. He also liked to pee on blankets; still does.

Pancake is a doll. She loves to give everyone bunny kisses as long as you promise to leave her alone. I blame her hearing troubles on her lop ears. I wish her ears worked. :(

If I get more rabbits in the future I'll be getting them from a shelter for sure.
