You guys are SO wonderful!!! Thank you so much for thinking of us :)

Well, Sherry just got home a little while ago. I think I'll write all about it tomorrow because there's a lot to tell and I'm beat. Suffice it to say that there was WAAAYYY more going on in her poor little mouth than abscesses. In fact those (3) haven't even been removed yet. That's for next time.

She had four hours of surgery with the dentist and his tech as well as the clinic's exotics specialist and his tech working on her. Lots going on in her tiny little mouth. He said he couldn't even imagine how she's been eating normally and acting normally with the way her teeth/mouth have been. After that long and all the complications they ran into, they wanted to get her off of the anethesia. She's got a long road ahead.

She's still a little groggy and out of it, but I've seen her nibble some banana and parsley, drink a little water, and have seen a few small poops.

I guess she is one tough little cookie after all! When Julie/Treasured Friend rescued her from being pts she had been living in an aquarium with nothing but corn cob bedding for three years. What a tough and brave little girl!

I'll write more tomorrow and I want to thank everyone again for your support and encouragement. RO folks are the best!!!

Cara, Sherry, and Button

Im so relieved to hear thatSherry's ok.

I'll look forward to hearing all the details tomorrow . Shes such a lucky girl though to be in your care.

Now back to bed for me :)

I'm so happy she's come through the surgery ok. :)

Poor little girlie, her mouth must be so painful. :(I hope she's ok, she's still in my thoughts and prayers. :hug1

4 hrs is really a long surgery..poor thing.

I'm sure she will be uncomfortable for a long time
If you need assistance in making a soft gruel for her my recipe of pumpkin , critical care, pelletsand pineapple juice is so good that beau and Babette eat it out of the bowl.

Please let us know how she is doing

You both must be exhausted

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd give a quick update on how Sherry is doing post-surgery...

Her recovery is coming along quite well thanks in large part (very large part) to the advice and support from RO members :)

On the positive side....she is very active and energetic. In fact, more so than I've seen her in a long time. I don't know if its because she's flying high on her pain meds (Buprinex) and has forgotten that she has arthritis in her leg and a sore mouth, or if it's because 5 days of antibiotics are just making her feel better overall. Probably a combination of both! She doesn't want to stay in her pen and "asks" to come out. Something she hasn't done in ages. Once she's out she runs and jumps on her stool more than usual. When I'm sitting with her in her pen to give her meds or try to get her to eat, she will jump up on my leg and then try to get up to my shoulder or she'll kind of climbup my back. It's so good to see her like this!

On the negative side...she's still not eating much. After trying many, many, many things, she will only eat plain pumpkin, baby food applesauce, and mashed banana. I'm able to sneak in a little unflavored Pedialyte in each, but not much or she won't take it. And, get this, she will only eat from a spoon. Not from a saucer, not from a bowl, not even from a spoon laying next to her on the floor. Only when I hold the spoon for her :)

I put a divider between her and Button so I can see if she is eating or pooping. I think she may have eaten a few pellets today. It looks like there are less on her plate, but I can't tell for sure. Her poops are very minimal and very, verysmall. On the good side though, she is peeing in her litterbox which she hadn't been doing for a long time. However, all her little poops are on the ground near her. I'm stumped as to why she won't drink water out of her bowl.

I'm sure I'll be talking with my regular vet tomorrow. I'm going to ask if she should come in for fluids and, if so, I'm going to learn how to do it for future reference. The three abscesses are still there but much smaller and I just have to clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide and water. The dentist will take care of those next time. He also foundone loose molar and one loose premolar that he will decide what to do with later.

So, all in all, I'm really happy with how she's doing. And, I can't thank everyone enough for all of your good advice and support. It helped so much! :)

Glad to hear she seems to be doing well!

Did you ever say what was actually wrong? I see where you said three abscesses? Did the vet remove any teeth or do anything about the other abscess that burst?

Poor Sherry, its so much for a little bun to handle. This is when their true strength and courage really shows through.

And Max did the same thing to me- he wouldnt eat off anything but a spoon that I had to hold. Little brats :)

I read on the medical rabbit site that some rabbits have had very bad reactions to full strength hydrogen peroxide,

I would never use it full strength
Has anyone else heard this.?

It's good to hear Shery is doing better. This site oif for feline CRF and it has an excellent step-by-step picture guide for giving subcutaneous fluids. The process is the same for rabbits as it is for cats. It may provide a useful guide along with your vet's instructions.

You know, Ive read a lot of mixed opinions about using HP for wounds. I think the general consensus has been that its good to use for abscesses and other wounds.

After Max's surgery we used something that was baytril mixed with sort of saline. It worked great.

Cara said "hydrogen peroxide and water" so Im assuming its diluted a bit. Should be ok.

Hi,

Yes, the vet told me to use a 50/50 mixture and clean around the wound, not directly in it. I'll write more later about what exactly was wrong and what the dentist did.

Ijust went in the basement to do some laundry and found my air conditioning unit is leaking, the floor is wet, and the filter is drenched. Great, just what I need :( And of course it had to happen on a Sunday night. I'm hoping I can get through tonight and call the repairman in the morning. I'll be fine, and I think the cats too, but I can't let me little buns get too hot. Aarrggh!!!

There was a big discussion about this recently on EtherBun, and the overwhelming consensus was: don't; full-strength especially. You'll have to check on the discussion at EB, though. You can simply do a search on "hydrogen peroxide" in their archives. Two members had rabbits die after it was administered full-strength for wound cleaning. Links to those posts are in the recent discussion there...

Is it one of those window air conditioning units? If so, we had this happen once. We noticed it wasnt blowing cold air and then it starts leaking. I opened up the front panel completely and the whole thing was covered in ice. I had to unplug it and chip away ice and use a hairdryer. After that it worked fine. Hopefully yours is something simple :)

I didn't read it correctly. I've had vets use it on small areas 0f my rabbits straight but then again the vets here don't know.

I'm really glad that she's doing OK.

OMG we posted at the same time
Is it hot in Milwaukee? It cooled off here and rained.
Hopefully you can get the ac fixed tomorrow.

Yes I read about hydrogen peroxide on etherbun

Only thing is what could be substituted.? :?

I know some people use weak betadine solution but I don't know if that is for an abscess.

Just to be safe I'm not going to use the hydrogen peroxide tonight. I'll ask my vet what is safer when I talk to her tomorrow. Thanks for letting me know about that.

I'm crossing my fingers that tomorrow when I wake up her little pile of pellets will be gone :)

Hi everyone,

Sherry is doing quite well! Things are good...

She went to my regular vet (but saw the tech not the doctor) on Monday and got some fluids and a GI cocktail.

She is now eating pellets and romaine. She doesn't seem to be able to eat hay which is what Maureen said about Beau (her dental patient) too. Her poops look almost regular sized as of tonight and I've seen her drink from her dish quite a bit.

She's off of the Metacam and Buprenex and is still active and alert without them. She loves her Baytril and I figured out that if I give her some mashedbanana while I'm giving her her injection, she doesn't even notice I'm doing it.Yay for my little Sherry! :)

One of the culture results came back, not sure if it was aerobic or anaerobic, but the dentist said it grew a "plethora" of bacteria. I thought that was funny. He's waiting until the other comes back to see if any of her antibiotics should change.

I'm going to put her and Button back in their regular house tomorrow. They've been living in a temporary "hospital room" this week...actually an exercise pen with a NIC divider between it.

My air conditioner is still dripping in my basement but not as much. I'll have to have it repaired. At least its working as it has been hot and VERY humid. Last but not least, I smashed the back of my car into a pole yesterday. Aargh. They say trouble comes in three's so I'm hoping that is my third (Sherry, the air conditioner, and the car)! :)It's been a LOOOONG week and I'm so tired!

Thanks for asking about Sherry!! You guys are great.I'll write more if there are any developments on Wednesday...

Cara

P.S. I forgot to call my vet today to see if there is something better than the hydrogen peroxide/water mix. Anyone know of anything???
