Hi! Welcome to the forums!

I've always wanted to make a cage and seeing all those cagepicturesgives me so many ideas. I guess I'll have a bigproject to do over the summer.

Hi! Welcome to the forum! And way to go for doing your research ahead of time. :thumbup

I love those wire grids! Sometimes we call them NIC cages, after one of the older brands of grids. Elf Mommy's right-there's all sorts of examples and instructions in the Bunny 101 cagethread.

Here's a pic of my first grid cage.

It is now half-dismantled, because now that I have more space I gaveboth of my pairs of rabbits large pens made out of wire grids.

I can lie down in it!:D

Those grids are also handy for bunnyproofing. I've used themto block the rabbits from my fish tank and all it's wires, and forseveral other things in my old apartment.

Thanx for all the replies everyone!!

I was looking all over the internet for Neat Ideas cages andOrganize-It cages and the NIC's that I did find were about $22. Ifigured I'd go with them until I found these walmart cages but I wasn'tsure if they were the same thing and how many grids came in thepackage. I figured I'd have to buy 4 sets of the walmart cages to makethis condo that I've been eyeing for awhile:

I'm not sure where you are, but you can also getgrids at Target and Shopko. They are about $15, but sometimesgo on sale for $10.

That's a pretty cool cage on the website, but I would change onething. Make it at least three grids long. Each gridis 14 inches, and 28 inches is not a very long cage. I know,I had to split that first cage in two when Fey and Sprite becameunbonded for a while. They're dwarfs, and they didn't havemuch room to go in any direction, even with a shelf to jump up onto.

Hi, welcome to Rabbits Only! It's so great thatyou are doing some research before adopting a bunny. By the way, thosegrids work great for cages (and they're fairly inexpensive too:)).

Matt:cool:

We've used those as Maisie's cage...they'reGREAT!! And you can build a cage that's so much larger thanthe average hutches and such you can buy and for so much cheaper!!

I connected Maisie's panels with zip ties (which are sturdier than theround connectors they come with), and reinforced stability with woodendowels. It's HUGE for her...she LOVES having so much room torace around and binky in! Not only that, but there are SOMANY options as far as how you want the cage to look. You cando just about ANYTHING with those cube panels! :)

Here are a couple pictures of Maisie's cage:

An overall picture (as best as I could fit onto one picture...lol)

A good view of the two levels we put in the cage (as well as the wooden dowels that support the top level)

I hope those give you a good idea of what her cage looks like, and what you can do with the panels.

You can also check out the following thread containing pictures ofmembers' cages. It's where I got the idea of how to constructMaisie's cage. :)
http://rabbitsonline.net/view_topic.php?id=1931&forum_id=1

Another idea...google something like NIC Cages, and you should be ableto find MANY pictures. :) That's what I did as wellwhen I was researching how I wanted to build Maisie's cage. :)

Be sure to post pictures of the finished product!! :D

Bumping because I'm having troublefinding threads dealing with bonding of rabbits and multiple cats. Cananybody point me to any? I've read tons of articles on the topic but Iwanted to hear some firsthand accounts on the subject.

Hey! I didn't realize you were tryingto bond your bun with your kitties, or I would haveresponded! Sorry 'bout that!

To tell my story thus far...

We have two 2yr old kitties (brother and sister from the same litter), and our Maisie bun is four months old.

We brought Maisie home just over two months ago. The kittieswere fascinated with her at first, but have gradually become used toher. At first, they were extremely interested and would getreally offended when she would come right up to sniff noses withthem. As time has gone by, we've noticed them actuallysleeping while she was out (and when they knew she was out, no less),instead of watching while hiding behind things.

Here are the things we did that made things easier for everyone:

- We got both kitties Soft Claws (feel free to ask anything about themif you like) so we wouldn't have to worry if they decided to swipe ather, or paw at her in curiousity.

- We made sure to give all three loads of attention and love so no one would feel left out.

- When we let Maisie out, the cats are always around, so they all getused to each other. Also, when she's out, we don't restrictthe cats' desires to go up to her, sniff her cage, etc. so they don'tfeel the need to do it when we're not around.

- We give the kitties treats after Maisie's visits if there weren't anypaw swipes. This encourages the good behaviour.

The only trouble we have anymore is with Sunny (our female kitty) beingjealous in general of Maisie, but it's slowly going away.Hobbes (our male) is happy to see her, and is even starting to playwith her a bit when she's out! It's been a pretty slow (andsometimes really frustrating) process, but it's coming along, and hasmade some great progress since getting the kitties the SoftClaws. (I admit, we should have done that from the get-go,but there aren't a lot of people that have both kitties and bunnies, sowe didn't have a whole lot to go on as far as advice.) Wefind both kitties having the desire to stick their paws in her cage, which we allow (unless they're doing it while she's drinking, eating, etc.) because if you try to staunch the curiousity, it won't satiate, and will just build. Not to mention they start resenting youif you don't let them do what they need to understand your bun.

I've had many, many cats over the years, so maybe I can help as far asyour kitties' personalities as well! So, what are yourkitties' ages, genders, fixed status, and personalities?

Also, what's your bun like (as far as the same factors)?

I hope all this helps! I should be able to help even morewhen I know those things about your kitties and bunny.:)

P.S. Feel free to check out my posts thus far about them. :)

Here's a few. Pippattacked my cats (they wereinitially very friendly towards her until she hit puberty and startedtrying to rip their tummies open), butsince she's beenspayed, she only goes after them if she sees me petting them.

Two or three of the other bunnies ignore the cats, and one keeps approaching the cats trying to make friends.

From the cats' side, they're all terrified of Pipp (for good reason),two of my three cats ignore the other bunnies, and one of the catsREALLY likes the bunnies (except Pipp) and is trying to bond andplay. Dill, the bunny that likes cats is up for it,but they haven't quite figured out how to do it. The catkeeps trying to get the bunny to chase her, but the bunny hasn'tfigured that out yet. And the bunny wants to groom the cat,but the cat hasn't figured THAT out yet.

Hope this helps. :)

As for the cats, we found Ms. Lady before shewent into heat for the first time in March '98. We figured she wasabout 7 months old or so. She went into heat a few days later so we hadto let her out. We eventually found her again and found out she waspregnant. She had Onyx and 3 other babies in June of '98. We kept Onyxbecause he reminded us of our old cat and gave the other 2 away. SoOnyx is 8 and Ms. Lady should be an old 8/ young 9.

I'm more worried about Ms. Lady because she seems more prone tobeing a predator (I'm pretty sure she kills all the mice thathappen into our home). But she's a really sweet, affectionate girltowards any human and always has been. Onyx is extremelt playful but heusually just does whatever his mother does so I'm not as worried abouthim. I figured I'd build the cage and have them sniff it out for a fewdays to get used to it and then when I get the bunny, hold each of themat seperate times and show them the bunny in the cage so they don't seethe rabbit as a threat or prey.

Here's Pipp and my cat Houli in happier days. She always hadto eat when the cats ate. Thefamily dinnertradition, I guess.;)

I don't think you'll have any problem with the cats. THeyalmost always get along, or ignore each other. As long as youdon't have a real outdoor 'hunter'.

Aww :) Beautiful pets! I feel better now.

Now if only this semester will end so I can get home and get to rearranging!!!

Once they're friends, do your rabbits ever need to be kept in the cageagain or do you let them roam free with your cats and the return to thecage whenever they're ready?
