Hi folks,
I have been a rabbit person most of my life, having had house rabbits back before it was 'cool' and before you could find a vet who had any idea how to treat a bunny. I've had just about every kind of bunny, but Flemish are my favorite. For the past decade or so, I went without a rabbit and instead cared for a pound "puppy" who just passed away. I am thinking of getting a rabbit again, and have joined this forum to see what's new in rabbit care. While I'm not quite ready yet (still bunny proofing the house and, honestly, mourning the loss of my pup), I'm hoping to maybe find my future companion here. I'm overwhelmed with how many rabbits need homes, though, and was wondering....how do you choose? I mean, gosh, I could take just about every rabbit I see home with me. I'm deathly afraid of going to a shelter, because I just don't know how I'll choose one rabbit and leave the others behind. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

My heartfelt condolences for the loss of your "Pound" puppy. Have one myself and they are awesome dogs. I think any animal that is rescued or adopted knows they are special and appreciate it deeply with complete unconditional love. Well, that's how I see it with Jake, our "Pound" Puppy and Willard, the rescued rabbit.

Smart that you are starting to plan and get things in order. Regarding picking a bunny, I can say I'm like you. Want to take them all home. My advise is to keep to your plan of one rabbit or two because they always like company. And two is just as easy taking care of as one. Like your "Pound" puppy, you will know which one will steal your heart. But stick to your plan. It's tough, but you don't want to go overboard and get overwhelmed with too many saved rabbits. Not good for you or them.

And if you don't want to go to a shelter, there are lots of breeders who have stock that are not show quality that need homes too.

Wishing you success in finding your new Rabbits. Being a slave to these Masters is about the best kind of slave to be.

Look forward to hearing how you make out.

Hi! I picked out my rabbit from the shelter and left the others "behind" with the knowledge in my head that I will donate leftover rabbit things to them. I look online and feel warm and fuzzy whenever some got adopted.
Having a shelter rabbit is amazing and loads cheaper then a show unneutered/spayed rabbit! :)

Thanks Karen and Jj. While I did go thru a breeder many years ago to get a young Flemish, I am more of a rescue/rehome type of person nowadays. I know better than to take on more than I can handle, so that's why I'm pretty sure i'll be looking to adopt one bun, maybe a special needs or one that doesn't like other buns for whatever reason. I am home most of the day, so he/she will not want for company. I will be watching the boards and reading up. Shooting for adoption sometime in the Spring, I hope. Thanks again for the welcome. :)

Wishing you all the luck in the Spring. Have a rescue myself. Have to say, he's been a blessing for my husband and myself. Karma works.
