Hello my bun has been on and off sick vet thinks he has an ear infection or e cuniculi. He’s been on antibiotics but things are not looking good he falls over and spins now:( and I’m having to force feed him he has an appointment Tuesday morning. We thought for sure maybe he has an infection because he has white discharge coming from his eye. I’ve tried searching the Internet if e cuniculi causes eye discharge but found nothing? Does anyone know if it does?

It's possible for there to be an eye infection that's not related to the loss of balance. Meaning, it could be e. cuniculi and an eye infection. Or it could be the antibiotic wasn't the right one, or it wasn't prescribed for long enough. What antibiotics has the vet tried so far and for how long? Is your rabbit still on meloxicam, and was the panacur given for a full 30 days? Did you ever end up taking your rabbit to a specialist, or were xrays or scans ever done?

It might be worth getting on one of the head tilt Facebook groups (Help for head tilt hoppers, On the wonk, etc). There will be rabbit owners there that have gone though this all with their own rabbits, so can share all they learned from their experience. There are a couple listed in the link below.

Update my bun had an appointment Tuesday (different vet i decided to give them a try) they did blood test but I am waiting for the results they are also testing for e cuniculi. They do not want to give me panacur until the test come back. But they did give me a higher dose of baytril. I also had to leave him at the vet for the test and ear flushing he had a lot of crusties *~* they also gave him an antibiotic injection I don’t know what kind it was but it help him quite a bit he’s more alert and active! Eating and drinking on his own but still spins sometimes when loosing his balance. His next vet appointment is a week from now. But I have a question I just realized the baytril they sent me home with looks and smells completely different from the other vet he use to go to?! You think they might have giving me some other type of baytril or medication? It’s a higher dosage also. It doesn’t smell as strong it’s almost odorless and is colored clear milky whitish. The other one was clear with a tint of yellow? I’m a little scared to give it to him now…they are closed right but I will call them in the morning tomorrow I just wanted to get the antibiotics started tonight

Baytril in generic form is enrofloxacin; they could've had it compounded somewhere else hence the change in consistency, kind of like ibuprofen tablets looking different across several brands but being the same drug- you can certainly call and ask when they open again.

The eye discharge can potentially be from the head tilt. When Sage had either E Cuniculi or an ear infection (we treated for both) she blinked her "upside" eye a lot less and it bulged out a little, so didn't get moisturized and cleaned through normal blinking like the other eye. The "upside" ear also accumulated a little more wax since she couldn't clean it herself. Both resumed to normal function once the head tilt resolved.

Best wishes for your bunny!
