Carpet shredder

So I know bunnies like to dig and eat the soil and grass and stuff outside.... but thoughts... my Bennie has a bad habit of chewing and digging on the carpet inside and shredding it.... is this because of instinct or an unfavorable behavior or attention seeking? I ask that because sometimes he just does it, but a lot of the times when he does it, he’s been laying on the floor with me while I pet him and as soon as I stop petting him, he goes straight to digging and pulling the carpet with his teeth and sometimes even pulling on my clothes.

If it’s when you stop petting it could be an attention seeking behaviour. If my bunny comes up for cuddles and I ignore her she will start by licking the bed/flood next to me, then if I keep ignoring she starts to dig until I pay attention again.
