Poor Freckles :(
We adopted him in late July. if you don't know the bunderground story there's a thread about it on this forum.

He is neutered, was 1year old in may about 3lbs
Oxbow adult bunny pellets, about 1/8c per day
Unlimited hay, Timothy, orchard, oat as treats
2c veggies/day minimum, usu romaine and organic packaged green mixes, with mint, tomato fruit, basil from the garden (no pesticides, fertilizers), no iceberg, an occasional baby carrot about 1x a week

He's a happy, friendly, active bunny. No mood changes no matter what his tummy is up to. Cage is NIC 2w x 3L x 3h with x-pen attached that he has 24/7 access to. Litterbox trained.

Freckles has never had perfect poos. They tend to the smallish side but his vet visit in late July when we first got him found no issues. At that time he was also having soft fecals, and not eating cecals. We attributed this to stress from the massive travel he went through.

When restricted to hay and water his fecals normalized and he began consuming cecals. Gradually we reintroduced pellets and veggies and everything seemed ok. Slowly his fecals became smaller, and about 5 days ago output decreased. So we took pellets away and continued hay and veggies. We began baby gas drops in case this is pre-stasis. No change in fecal size. Wednesday night we started nutrical for dogs (saw it recommended in the library section) and continue gas drops.

Last night he began passing large, soft fecals around his cage, and passing some urine over them/with them. The fecals are formed but oblong and large, softer than normal. He has dribbled urine before, once or twice when we come home from being out (excitement perhaps?). He is a picky eater lately, sometimes loving his pellets, sometimes throwing the bowl and turning his nose up. Also he gets an oxbow digestive support tablet 1x a day except when he turned his nose up lately. Today I noticed his messy backside and I have made a vet appointment for him at 4pm today.

Sorry about the long post but I wanted to give as much info as I can. He is so tiny, and he's a spotted bunny. Could he be a megacolon bunny?
Also his box always has smelled like a barn. Neither of my other 2 bunnies smell.
Thanks for any advice

:(

You are doing the right thing taking him to the vet. My little kiwi goes through bouts where she's not pooping a lot so I have cisapride and metacam on hand for her. She's about 4 pounds and gets 0.5 mls of cisapride once a day and the 2kg dose for metacam once a day. I start her on that the minute I notice her fecal output lower then normal. Could you ask your vet about getting cisapride? It helps kiwi. It stimulates the go system and makes her hungry so she eats.

Could the veggies be upsetting your bunnies system?

Oh poor Freckles! I'm so sorry he's having such a hard time. I am praying the vet can get him feeling better

Panda has had two bouts of gas and tummy troubles, but luckily they were short bouts. His teeth are improving greatly with more nomming on twigs.

You are such a blessing in Freckle's life. He's a very lucky to have such a great mom.

Thanks guys

@mariah - I was wondering about the veggies too.
@Brandy - sorry to hear Panda has issues too. Panda is also very lucky to have you!

Well our vet is sending Freckles to a specialist at the University of Pennsylvania for a consult after seeing his x-rays. He has quite a bit of gas in his system but since he is still willing to eat he has her baffled. She is concerned that he might have a partial obstruction. She said the exotics specialist might do a barium dye with an ultrasound to see the movement through his system. She will call on Tuesday to make an appointment for Saturday. Wish Freckles luck!

Oh dear, I just saw this. I'm so sorry Freckles is having tummy troubles. Sending love and good thoughts that the new vet will have answers and be able to help. Freckles is blessed to have you.

Harvey and Halo send their love and prayers!!!

Freckles had a rough day yesterday. His output was very low, and he wasn't interested in eating which sent me into a panic. I gave him more smithecone-sp? And I gave 1cc Metacam that I had from Humma's stasis bout. That seemed to do the trick. He passed a ton of fecals that were large and semi-soft. Then he was bouncing off the walls like his old self. I'm still feeding mostly hay and water. But when he didn't want to eat yesterday I did give a small romaine leaf which he ate. It's been several days since he's had pellets. I really just want his system to calm down until he sees the specialist. Maybe we will find out why his system never seems to be normal.

Waiting on pins and needles :(

I am so greatful for flavored meds, my buns practically yank the syringe from my hands!

Thanks Katherine we are crossing everything we've got too! Doesn't it all happen on a holiday weekend when offices are closed :rollseyes

Mariah-thanks for asking about him :)

Update: the vet a the university of Pennsylvania is on vacation so today Freckles went to my regular vet again for a head x-ray to see if there are any abscesses below his tooth roots. He had to be sedated for the procedure.

At 2pm we received a call that Freckles' heart rate dropped during the procedure and became critical. He was given a medication to counter the sedative, and became stable. He's not out of the woods bc he is still groggy. Our vet said she will call us by 6 pm today to say if she is comfortable sending him home. If not, she asked if we minded if she took him home with her for the night to monitor him constantly since when the office closes noone will be there. She is apparently having him under constant monitoring at the office. I must say I am impressed with her dedication to him.

I can't even begin to describe how I feel right now. Especially since we lost Trillian in January during her spay. Her heart stopped under anesthesia.

So please pray for my poor Freckles. He really is such a sweet, friendly, happy-go-lucky little bunny. :(

Heard from the vet. She is taking him home tonight because he is in severe GI stasis. He was grinding his teeth loudly at the vet. She said she will give him critical care and pain meds tonight, with baby gas drops, and she is contacting an emergency pharmacy to get a medication to directly counteract the sedative, and we will take him to Pennsylvania tomorrow morning at 10am.

His x-ray showed he is full of gas, much worse than his x-rays last week. I'm so scared we will get that awful phone call at any minute tonight. I'm so confused as to how this happened.

We are praying for Freckles and hoping that you hear some good news.
Hopefully the vet can help Freckles through the stasis and he is back to normal by Monday!!!
Our Dilly said a prayer for him too.

aww, poor freckles! that's really awesome of your vet to care enough to take him home and nurse him overnight, though :D

Gaz, Nala and I will be sending good thoughts his way until he gets better!

Oh my goodness, what a scary time for you. It sounds like Freckles is getting some great aid and attention though. I hope he feels better very very soon! Sending prayers for a gas-free tummy!
