My thought is that if a rabbit is indoors where it gets plenty of time near their humans (even if not directly interacting, but simply "hanging out") then I don't think it is necessary to get a 2nd rabbit.

I have had several single rabbits that did seem quite content. However, there are some rabbits who seem to really need a bondmate to thrive. One rabbit I had, after her bondmate passed, became naughty and destructive even a few months after. She seemed to really need a bunny companion. (Ironically, she was the choosiest in which rabbit she would accept when it came time to bonding.)

But my opinion is that many rabbits can thrive as single bunnies if they are getting enough companionship and interaction, and out-of-cage time.
