Hi Guys

My female rabbit needs to go to the vets this morning for her second set of injections, she had Myxo two weeks ago, then last week I found the babies so He went she stayed home. The vet told me to bring her in this week.

Should I go????? My friends called this morning (she had a litter last year for a friend who breeds rabbits) and she said the mother may reject the babies when I get back?????

HELP!

Sorry make that three weeks ago for her last lot!

My personal opinion is that the jab, which is presumably for VHD will put too much stress on the doe and she may not take care of herself nor her bunnies.

I personally would wait to get her vaccinated until she has finished nursing them and they are weaned away from her, for her sake, which will be in about 7-8 weeks.

I didn't get my doe vaccinated when the others got done for that very reason, and she is still currently nursing them, so she will be vaccinated soon.

If she was vaccinated, I doubt she would reject the babies, but obviously when she comes back she could be very stressed and distressed and run around and possibly accidentally hurt the babies.

Thanks for that.

I decided that I wouldn't take her (she was booked in at 10.20), I spoke to the vets this morning and they said that they wouldn't recommend it!!!!! It was them who said last week that she really needed to have it as there had been cases localy last month.

I think I am going to look for a new vets practice, preferable one where all the vets communicate with one another!

I'm glad you didn't take her.

Yes, it sounds like you need to find a vets that you trust and are reliable and rabbit savvy.

If there is no one on that list that I gave you, near you, then maybe try phoning up your local rescues and asking if they know any rabbit savvy vets in your area.

No there was nobody within a reasonable distance, the bolton one was the closest at about 40 minutes away. I work full time too so they wouldhave to have a sat surgery. I've decided to speak to the practice manager at our vets, they've been our vet for years, in fact we had a hamster once who had a funny jaw and had to have his teeth clipped once a month and they were fantastic with him. If I don't get any joy there then I will call round the local vets and interrogate them! In fact my friend (whos bunny I was looking for when I found Charlie) has just found a reasonable vets practice about 20 minutes away, so if mine don't have some positive things to say then I might go there instead. Oh and they charge a LOT less too, I paid £30 each bunny for their injections (and I am looking at the same again if I keep the babies) and my friend paid £24...oh makes me cross!

Must go......off to clean out the bunnies! Just been to buy some heavy duty gloves to protect my fingers from Lola the terrible..LOL!

Heavy duty gloves are a vicious rabbit owners dream :D

Sounds like a good plan to help you find a decent vets for your bunnies. Often vets that specialise in some things are not so great at others. Good luck hunting someone decent down :)

Well I totally forgot to use the gloves! She was fine today, apart from the attacking the brush (she always does) she was quite happy for me to tidy her cage and wash it out a bit.

I wish she would use a litter tray though, she still moves them around the hutch then wee's behind them :X any hints and tips would be very much appreciated! I have tryed putting wet/dirty straw in for them....

If you go to the first page of the forum, and scroll down you will see the Bunny 101 forum. In there there are things that you might find really interesting and useful, one being a thread about litter training a bunny.

I had a bunny that did what yours did, and I tried all sorts of different things, like different litter trays, hiding the tray under hay, or newspaper, trying different litter, using litter trays in different places, and I have no idea what happened but something worked because one day she started using it perfectly.

Just keep persevering :) You'll both get there.

Fantastic...I had almost given up

I will read and re-try!!!!

Hey the sun came out today here! Charlie went for a run round without getting wet!
