funny. they just called me and said the exotic specialist that was supposed to come in tonight wont be there....the problem with tomorrow morning is that the person who was going to pay for it and id pay back will be at work.

hmm. i told the lady on the phone that id bring the rabbit in anyhow tonight and have the non-exotic specialist look at her, but maybe i wont. the east side clinic, listed on morgan ave is the one ur talking about i guess?

i work with the person who was going to lend me the money, so maybe i can see if we can trade shifts tomorrow. darn it. i wonder if just having the non-specialist take a look would be wise or since itll be 75 just to look at it if i should just wait? if i wait, it might be wednesday around 4 pm at the earliest as i work mon night, the person paying works mon during the day...she works tues night and tues during the day! agh. so many things to figure out.

The vet you want is at the clinic mentioned above, his name is Scott Thomson. Really rabbit savvy and good with the humans too. Make sure you tell them it is an emergency and that you need to see them ASAP. It is a very busy vet office, if I were you I would just walk in and see what happens. You can use my name as a referral I can send you that in pm. I can also give you my phone number if you need anything else.

I would like to know tho, where did you purchase this rabbit? There are certain places around here that I would not recommend doing this and if you are on the west side I am thinking that the place I have in mind is where you got it. If it was Pet Food Supply, they were selling seriously sick rabbits last year at this time.

I can tell you where to go to get just about everything you need in this town for your rabbit and you are welcome to pick my brain (at least what is left of it) anytime!

I hope you find out what's wrong with this little girl! I have no advice to offer, just hoping she gets better!

*Oh, andbtw. Be v ery careful about taking info frompetstores. I've had first hand that theylie (intentionall or not) and most things they say are bizzare and un true. Just to giveyou the heads up!
 
i just cant win. :X

i called the east side animal hospital, but they cant see her today as the exotic doctor isnt in on saturdays. she gave me a number to another vet who deals with exotics and said they would take her.

i called that number and they said their exotic doc isnt in on saturdays- its his day off. that lady gave me a number to a 3rd vet.

i called the 3rd vet and they seem to be open on saturdays at 9am (their message wasnt exactly clear!)...so i have to wait another hr probably to be told that the exotic doc isnt in on saturdays! oh man. (sigh)....

so, every exotic pet vet in town might be out on saturdays. theyre closed on sundays...cant go on mon or tues as the person who is paying will be at work all day. did i mention this is frustrating? :)
 
thanks for the info spring. i called 3 pet stores and they all seemed to give me advice but didnt seem to know for sure about any of it. the one lady said white bread and the first reply here said that was totally wrong...so i take it shes probably not a good source for advice from now on! tho, she was the one they let me talk to when i asked about someone who knew the most about rabbits.

ive noticed a lot of conflicting info online and in the stores. for example- i see yogurt drops in the stores and it says safe for rabbits but many sites ive visited say that yogurt drops are a big no-no for rabbits. who is right, and who is wrong? on that particular issue, ive no idea as both sources seem equally credible.

always trying to be safe which info is reliable and what isnt...and trying to back it up with more sources to make sure the original advice is right and safe.
 
so she went to the vet and it she was very dehydrated. they gave her a lactated ringer's solution and she had coccidia (the vet said another rabbit from the same pet store was there yesterday with the same thing but worse than mine)....

i got albon solution to take care of that coccidia, i guess? it says to give her .25 cc's once a day for 20 days, to keep her in a different cage from the other rabbit...give her unlimited hay and no pellets and i assume keep using the pedialyte. i mixed it with some water, because that stuff is 7 dollars a bottle!

she wants to see her again in a week, but other than that she should be good. shes eating the hay- i just cleaned out the cage totally, put new bedding in and some fresh hay and shes eating it as i write this. thats a good sign according to the vet.

im so happy it wasnt anything critical and shell be okay. :) im going to call that pet store and tell them theyre selling unhealthy rabbits. my gf took the bunny, because i was at work...she said thevet asked her where she bought bunny andbefore my gf could answer the vet said the pet store name and was right. because of that other bunny from the same store with the same issue.

youd think if i buy a 19 dollar bunny from a pet store, andit has an infection from the very start (it must have originated in the store itself), and wehave other bunnies from the same store with the same issue, they should pay for the vet bill! it ended up costing 92 bucks andthats not counting the followup in a week. either way- im going to call them and tell them theyre selling sick rabbits if nothing else.

thanks for all the info everyone. ill post again after her checkup and as the 20 days progresses to report on how shes doing. :)
 
Agh! Darn Petstores!You could maybe report them to the SPCA and get the vets referance that he's dealt with sick animals from them before? That shouldn't be allowed, but still most petstores sell unhealthy animals.

I'm so glad she's on the road to recovery! :D I'll be looking forward to the update!

Also, btw those yogurt drosp from the petstore- almost pure sugar and v ery unhealthy. You'll find that probably 90% of 'rabbit treats' are very unhealthy for rabbits. For treats, I stick with a bit of fruit myself! Atleast then I know they didn't fill it with the crap that makes it appealing to us!
 
Glad to hear it was the lesser of the evils, but keep a close eye on her. (She's SUCH a cutie!!)

I'm sure it's okayto mix the Pedialyte with water (even though the company says not to), no worries there. :) Just keep it in the fridge and use it up in a couple of days.

One main thing I forgot to mention was that if she seems really thin, maybe give her a little Nutrical, a supplement that's made for cats and dogs, but is also good for rabbits. :)

I knew it was that Pet Store . There is a thread in here that talks about the epidemic that was going on here in Indiana, stemming from one breeder and those were the stores that he supplied to. Seems to me that they would have changed their breeder! Complain and send a letter not only to the SPCA, but the Mayor and or any one that has some power. A letter to the Courier & Press is a good idea too. I will send letters as well. This store either has to start employing people who know something about the stock they sell, able to recognize when something is wrong. Even something that is less important, like how to sex a rabbit. You were lucky (if that is the right term) that it was JUST coccidia, as I said they had a far deadlier disease circulating in there!

according to the vet, she said something about coming back in in a week and make sure shes okay...if she looks worse then bring her in sooner. the way my gf talked about it (she went to the vet, i was at work)...the vet was telling her that she wanted to make sure it wasnt something else. if they tested the sample fecesi brought in, then i wonder why she woul dhave said that? are there other tests that they can do that would show something else?

now my gf has me all worried. she had a lot of that parasite in her poop, so id assume it was that and there probably wasnt another issue. like i said- are there other tests that would have shown something else, or is the vet just saying that to be safe i wonder?

if it IS only that, its easy to treat from what she said- right? this medicine should work well to get rid of it? does the medicine sometimes not work? anyone know if that medicine deals with the parasite AND the diarrhea or what? i was thinking about that- maybe the parasite itself is the sole cause of the soft poop?

call me paranoid. :?:shock:
 
Welcome to the world of buns! I get very paranoid as well! You sound like a very responsible bunny parent! Also, I don't know about the soft poop (someone can correct me if it shouldn't be given) but you could also give her some alfalfa hay? It's very rich and can help her put on the weight.

I guess you'll just have to see in a weeks time. Was the fecel test a fecel float (Sorry if this doesn't make sense, just remembering with the tests about the droppings). I think the medicine probably will clear it up.

the print out with the price breakdown said fecal examination (float/smear)...

new problem now- i had the two bunnies together. the dark bunny now has soft poop. just today as far as i can tell, asi have them in different cages for now. the lop is eating hay right now and i saw her drinking a second ago. not tons of drinking, but some.

now im just worried because the vet said if they were housed together, the other bunny might have come in contact with the fecal pellets and maybe will get the same thing...tho the dark bunny is still very active, unlike the sick one. i cleaned out the black bunny's cage and then about an hr later, i see a bunch of poops that are softer than usual. no mucus at all, but theyre soft, and before we introduced her cage mate, she had rock hard poops.

i wonder if she got some of the parasite but is healthy enough to fight it off? i think my girlfriend said that the vet told her this might be possible since they were in the same cage.


i picked the black one up and shes VERY active...unlike her "sister", when i picked her up she flailed about like crazy, trying to get away...that and when i snapped for her, she came running down the long narrow cage area to me all quickly. so maybe she just has some soft poop...she doesnt seem at all sick like the one i took to the vet. or again maybe she got some of the parasite but is healthy enough to fight it off without much trouble? is that possible?
 
btw, after they injected her with an LRS to get her fluid yesterday, should she be drinking less? i saw her drink a little last night, but the bottle in her cage filled with pedialyte and water doesnt look like it went down at all overnight...??

i tried to put some in the cap to give her directly, but she didnt want any. i finally got her to drink a tiny bit by putting a cpl pellets in the cap with the pedialyte- she got a tiny bit of the liquid trying to get the 2 pellets. wasnt sure what else to do...she wouldnt even take it dropping from my fingers.

i was just thnking maybe the LRS hydrated her a lot and shes feeling no so in need of liquid right now? shes more active, it seems. 2 more small pieces of wet poop, but overnight not much else. not sure if shes pooping all that much, but some of the hay is gone and i saw her eating some of last night.


UPDATE: Okay, so when I gave her her medicine with the syringe...after she downed all of it, I put some pedialyte in the syringe and got her to drink around .7 cc' total. she kept pushing me away, but i was trancing her and slowly dropping it on her mouth and shed lick it up. Hope that was okay!
 
"That" petstore? I remember last year's problem, and you are lucky that it's only coccidia! (BTW, hi Susan!)

Yeah, she probably won't be as thirsty right after sub-cutaneous fluids. And .7 cc is a decent amount for a small young bun. Keep a close eye on her and make sure she's eating. A little Nutri-cal might help. It's a supplement made for cats and dogs that is safe for rabbits. You squish a little on her foot and she'll lick it off. It has calories and B vitamins which will boost her appetite. When I've used it, my rabbits hated the taste so much that the would eat hay to get the taste out of their mouths.;) Some rabbits actually do like it though because it's supposed to be banana flavored.

ah ha. im about to leave for work...the overhead light is on (theyre really bright!) and bunny is drinking as i type. still not drinking much, but i guess she was drinking tons before to make up for being dehydrated, so ive no real idea how much a "normal" amt is.

i guess if you said .7 cc's is a decent amt for a small bun, then thats not much at all- so maybe she just drank that muich thrui the bottle. :)

she turned around and is eating hay now.

im not noticing much poop tho. also hard to tell how much there should be as i removed one bun from this cage into a diff cage. shes definitely pooping less than the other bun. is that normal? its still a bit wet...some of it was. normal im sure.

where do you get nutrical? i read that on numerous sites but didnt see any at the pet food center. hmmm.
 
You can get Nutri-cal at most pet stores, usually by the dog medicines. I bought mine at Petsmart.

She probably wasn't pooping much because she wasn't eating much before. That should increase now that she's eating hay, which is excellant news, BTW! Her poops will be soft because of the coccidia but that should decrease as the meds start to fix that.
