trouble with growing fodder..

recently i bought 20lbs of barley seed specifically for sprouting into fodder. i have grown some in a shallow plastic food container, which i have not harvested, but rather trimmed to see if it will keep growing. a week ago i started a small batch in a solo cup that i cut to an inch or two high. i have several large drainage holes in the bottom and make sure it drains completely, but it appears to be growing small mold "hairs" on the roots. the very ends of the roots are brown and seem to be dead. the seed and the grass are both health and not moldy. how do i proven mold from growing on the roots??
