Hi!

My name is Rachel and I’ve got a big old bun named Steven. We live in the Sonoran Desert so we’re a bit cooped up as of now. I had another lil dude, Bloom, that I had to rehome due to behavioral issues, and now both are MUCH happier. ☺️ Bloom’s new family keeps me updated by sending me pictures and texts, which puts my soul at ease. Steven is currently still recovering physically from Bloom’s unfavorable treatment, but seems to have fully bounced back emotionally.

Steven is a two year old French Lop who was raised in a bunny mill under poor conditions. From what I could see when I picked him up, the shelter seemed to treat him poorly as well. He’s never bitten me, but was reported as “a biter”. He was very standoffish at first but after several months of patience and letting him have his space, he turned into a loving bun who’s very fond of standing behind my head on the sofa, sleeping inside of my nightstand and eating strawberries and parsley in a very messy and humorous fashion.

I love Steven very much and am happy to be here with all of you fine people! I am a first time bunny owner (I’ve done a lot of research) so I’ve just been lurking around the forums as of late. I hope to be more active as I learn more and live more with my bud Steven.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
We're in the same state. Did your bun come from a shelter or from a rabbit rescue? I know a couple rescues here, but they are pretty good with their rabbits.

Do you know Steven's weight? I had a french lop once and loved him to death! Then an out-of-state rescue sold me a "french lop" that ended up being a mini-lop mix. She was sweet but I had hoped for another french lop.

Hi! Thanks for the welcome. ☺️

He’s around 8 pounds right now, but I have him on a diet because he’d gotten a bit underweight due to stress with the other bunny. I need to weigh him again when he’s at a healthy weight.

He came from a Humane Society rescue up in Prescott. They seemed very ignorant about bunnies. They didn’t understand why he was biting when they were handling him poorly, not picking him up correctly etc. He was clearly not fond of them, thumping when they were around and they just thought it was a funny unique trait of his. They tried to cuddle him and pet him when he was stressed, another thing he hated. He was rescued when the government raided an abusive, overcrowded bunny mill in California toward the end of 2018, and it took him a long time to recover. I think that their response to him made him much worse. I essentially ignored him for weeks before he started to come around and feel more comfortable, stop thumping when I was in the room.

Yeah. Unfortunately I have also found that many shelters are pretty ignorant when it comes to rabbits. The Phoenix area has some good rabbit rescues. (used to have 2, but 1 may have turned to a sanctuary??)

The one actual French Lop that I had was around 9 lbs. He had been rescued from a hoarder/breeder situation and sent to Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue.

I do on occasion take my rabbits outside. Not often and only when the weather cools.
