Six week old buns chewing outdoor carpet

Hello everyone,
My buns just got big enough to be in their outdoor playpen and they are chewing the carpet rug that the playpen is on. It happens to be wet right now. Can I prevent this?

I would remove or cover the rug. Didn't see much chewing at that age, so to me it seems for some reason that rug is yummy. And they shouldn't ingest too much of it.

What can I cover it with? I only put it there because underneath is a wooden deck and I don't want them to chew that.

Indoors I use sturdy cardboard to cover stuff, outdoors plywood. But I think even hay would do the job.
