So Rusty and Akira have had a busy busy day today!

So I decided to call the vet today and see if they had an opening for Rusty and Akira to have a check up and was able to get in. I wanted to get a sort of plan down for Rusty's diet, get Akira on file incase anything happens in the future, and to talk to the vet about Akira's weird head thing. (if you don't know what the weird head thing is its where she always has her head tilted but she straightens it, so I was worried that maybe there was something wrong in the past as she has never gotten worse in the couple of months I have had her. )

So he started with Akira since I was most worried about her. He checked her ears and said that they were clear and there was no sign of past trauma and that it was probably just something that she does. He checked her teeth and said everything was good, she had a good body shape and was obviously not over- or underfed and was weighed in at 6.2lbs.

For Rusty he said that he was a little overweight, but it wasn't that bad. I just need to cut down on the pellets but I don't need to change it to timothy based pellets. He said the timothy hay that I provide is enough so alfalfa based pelletis okay, but it has to be in moderation. He said his sore hocks looked the same as when he first saw him in april 2007, so it didn't get worse. He said that the weight loss will help Rusty's sore hocks, and also help him be able to groom that back side of his (it gets matted easily and very dirty). He checked his teeth again and eyes and said he looked fine. He looked inside his ears a bit (not as thorough as Akira) and said they looked good and Rusty weighed in at 5.5 lbs.

He also put their files in his inbox so that he can have them on hand in 3 months. The vet's office will call me in 3 months time just to go do a weigh-in (free of charge, no appointment needed) and see how Rusty is doing on his new diet and see how Akira is doing with the limited pellets. So all is well with their health!

He said that they behaved so well. Akira was walking around outside of the little carry case I brought them in and grooming herself. And whenever the vet picked up Rusty she was putting her two front paws on his chest to get a closer look lol. He also said that Rusty reminded him of all those story books of rabbits in dress coats or vests and look gentlemanly with their round tummies and laughed at me when I called Rusty my little porker lol. He is just the nicest vet. He is so knowledgeable and kind and he never rushes through an appointment and is able to just talk to you so calmly. He is just so good with my babies. He picks them up like its an everyday thing and the rabbits just sit there like "okay, I won't kick you, you seem nice."

Anyways, to top off their busy day, I decided 2 floors wasn't enough for their cage so I added another level. Man, I am pooped from today! lol. And let me know what you think of the cage!

Mansions are always great as long as you don't have to pay for the mortgage!! :p

Wow, what a clever idea that is! I have a very similar cage for my baby bun and it never occured to me to take out the bottom and expand it like that. Very ingenious! I'm glad your bun is going to be fine.. when I read 'head tilt' I instantly thought, oh no!

I was kind of my dad's idea. He was so excited about having made a second level that we was like "we should make a third level! we will just take out the bottom and we can figure out how to make the walls so the bottom slides out!". I had a bunch of nic squares left so I kind of started making it and it turned into that. lol. The little colour grids are ugly but for now until we decide to pretty it up, it will be like that. I was a little worried with Rusty not jumping to the second level but he has already achieved that no problem so yeah ;)

I was a little worried the first time I brought Akira home and she kind of had that head tilt thing. But I just monitored it and nothing got worse or seemed to trigger it. Sometimes she hops around like that but most of the time its when she stares at you for a few more seconds she looks at you sideways like dogs do. I asked if there was anything I should keep an eye on and he said its just something she does. He owns rabbits and apparently he was a rabbit specialist in the UK so I trust him ;) Besides, he's attractive and has a British accent, can't go wrong with that :p
