It does sound like your vets haven't seen something like this before, which is surprising since others on our forum have. in any case, it's good that the new one is doing a culture and will get you the right antibiotics. i'd keep on the ones you have now. as for vinegar vs iodine wash, i think iodine would be less painful than vinegar. betadine (which is an iodine-type wash) might be best. i've never head a bunny with an infected wound (cross fingers!), so i'm not sure. that's just from my idea on how painful it would be to have a wound washed with vinegar as opposed to betadine. we have put betadine on small, non-infected wounds here though. finally, some bacteria can survive in pretty acidic environments, especially some of the ones that are already present on/in our bodies, so i'm not sure vinegar would kill them off...

good luck!

I don't feel comfortable with the 2nd vet either...unless the green is not pus (which I have seen myself in a pet rat who was bitten by his cagemate)

I would also (as tonyshumans said) not use the vinegar as it smacks of cruelty particularly if there is a wound or wounds under there. I would dilute the betadine (betadine is better than iodine and can be bought at a pharmacy under the name povidine iodine )

is there a way that you could talk your current vet in doing a phone consult with one of the above vets listed in pipp's post.
That would mean that you would have to do a lot of calling around and be quite persistent in getting another vet to listen to this rabbit"s problems. Another vet may have the knowledge and (if your present vet is willing) could talk with him on the phone.

I am not sure what the vet is seeing that is so unusual that they are puzzled. Most wound exuding pus are treated with both a wash and an oral antibioitic.

I hope that this bun makes it by the time the vets get it together re. what is the problem
I feel sorry for this rabbit but I know that you are trying

Keep us posted

Thank everyone for the support. Thats what I thought when the BobbyBrown website said to threat with vinegar, it's could be too acidic for the sensitive skin of my bun and I scared of what could happen if he licks it off. I just got Betadine it's 10% Provodine iodine, at what rate do you guys think I should delute it? I did cut some of the Bunny's hair in the green area plus some of it fell out, it seems like a white, thick mucus like substance comming out of the skin. Also, I noticed some patches of skin comming off and then healing with a brown crust. Sorry for too much detail...

You're so welcome, hon, but I feel like I wasn't completely clear in my last post:sad:.

I said I wasn't sure if I'd use any iodine on an injury? But, if I wasn't sure aboutthat, I most certainly wouldn't use vinegar! Most people don't know that I guess. I used to use it on salads, so very acidic, lol.

But, yeah, I wouldn't use either. I remember iodine as a child, ouch!:tantrum: Can't imagine vinegar! I need an explosion emot for that!:scared:

Sounds like you're on the right track, great going! Keep us posted!:)

oh your poor little bunny, I feel so sad for him, any updates?

Give him lots of cuddles from me and maybe a little treat if he will have it like a slice of cold apple.
He is going to need a lot of love.
And we need lots of updates,

you are in my thoughts and I pray he heals soon
:purplepansy:

I don't mean to be a pain to you but you do need tocall around and find a vet who is rabbit knowledgeable
This rabbit needs more Professional help than you are able to give him (althought you truly are trying your best!)

I have to agree with you there too, this little bun needs urgent medical attention from a rabbit savvy vet.
He is fragile and all the extra travel and stress is going to be hard on him but its worth it.

I am trying to understand whats going on:
The facts:

He has an abcess on his foot, its gotten into the bone, thats a hard one!

He has a skin bacterial infection on his side

How come you were told to cut the fur short? The vet should be the one to shave around the infection, apply an antibiotic onto the skin and also give you oral antibiotics for him and possibly inject him with some before you go home.

The abcess could well be painful, your bun may need painkillers too.

I can't say much becuse I am not a vet or even close but right now I am very concerned that Bunny is deseprate need of help.
You are doing what you can, keep at it!!

Keep him warm, comfortable dry, fed and watered.
Is he at the vets now? Has he come home with you?

How much did the non rabbit savvy vet charge you? You may be gettig a raw deal here.

I agree to with other RO members, do not use anythign liek vinegar or other self help methods, only a proper rabbit savvy vet can diagnose your problem.
I hope its not a bone abcess but since your vet is a bit clueless, lets hope the diagnosis is wrong.

Wishing the best, I know whats its like not to have the money. I pay my vet a measley amount every week, it builds up and when I have to go, there's that little reserve I can fall on.

Yes I know you are all right, I should have gone to a rabbit specialist but that's what I was told when I asked if they specialize in rabbits. I went to two different vets and both of them didn't know much accept for telling me the surgery is needed for the absesses and that would cost me about 600 dollars, but considering Bunny's age they are not sure if he will make it....Nobody said anything about the antibiotics threatments available. I have spent 150 on both visits plus antibiotics 45. Unfortunately, I had to buy my books and pay for school, therefore no money for the new vet as of righ now. I was trying to borrow some but no luck, so I have to wait till next week's paycheck, and then run to a new vet. I just hope Bunny will not get worse and will forgive me for not being able to help him right away... He does gets a lot of patting and treats from me and he is running around, alert, and curious as always.

Again, I thank you all for the support and understanding. It seems that all of people that I know don't understand what a rabbit's parent is going through when the bun is sick. All I hear is: how much? you know how many new ones you can get...are you serious? it's just a rabbit. They just don't get it :(. I am so glad I found this forum with all of you wonderful people, thank you all.
