Hi,

We have a Netherland Dwarf rabbit (1 year old) that will normally use his litter box in his cage, but will also pee & poop in the spot where he eats his Timothy hay. He also has peed a couple of times in an adjoining cage where there isn't any hay or litter. Is this fairly normal, especially peeing in the spots where his hay is?

Thanks,

BobbyV

Many rabbits will poop while they eat hay. This is natural. I put the litter box under the hay rack so they pee and poop while eating hay. Depending on the size of his cage, you can either move the litter box to the hay rack, move the hay rack to the litter box our put in a second box. You may need to do all of them to find what works for you an your rabbit.

The peeing in the other cage is probably terriroty marking. He is basically saying that that space is his. Blocking off that area would help if you need it for something else. If you don't really care if he does pee there, you can try adding another litter box. Cleaning the spot where he pees with vinegar and water should help. Blocking the specific spot can help break the habit.

My bunny pees on water/pellet bowls and hay if they are not happy with something. Sometimes, they try to send you a message, so see if there's any problem.
