I am open to suggestions and comments! It isn't perfect I know!

Just like it is important to read the ingredient labels of the foods humans eat, it is equally important to be looking at your animal’s food labels as well. Many people will be shocked at what is placed in food products for animals.

Soy is very controversial in hamster food (and other foods as well) as it has been linked to mammary cancer in mice. Soy is a member of the legume family, so it has been wondered if other members of the family can also increase risks for cancer or tumors. This includes green and yellow peas, which have been found in most of the mixes posted above.

Most veterinarians will urge you against feeding “fillers” to your animals-such as corn, rice, and soy. (Wheat is also included but wheat is in fact, good for hamsters, wheat is usually only excluded for cats and dogs)

While there has been a large movement to remove fillers, especially corn and soy, from cat and dog food, no such movements have been done in the small animal foods. Remember the number one reason why manufactures use these products is because they are cheap fillers for their food.

Carefresh complete is a new contender on the block, and recommended for Syrians along with a seed mix. However, corn is the first ingredient!

Other hamster owners will also tell you corn is fine in moderation, which it is, but if your feeding corn as a main stable (i.e your pellets) it no longer is “in moderation.” I suggest feeding an unsalted, unbuttered popcorn bit once and awhile as a treat, but that is it. Other times, it is argued that most hamsters only eat the “heart” of the corn, and therefore don’t eat very much of the corn. However, this hasn’t been proven, and it is difficult to tell whether your individual hamster is a hamster that only eats the heart, or eats the whole corn.

If we were to take out any food that contained soy or corn, Oxbow would be the only brand left to feed.

Oxbow also does not have peas.

After legume’s, raw beans can cause diarrhea in hamsters. This is especially true in raw Kidney beans. However, the debate of mung beans, garbanzo beans, and others, as a light add to mixes is still out. So far the beans that are not recommended are raw Kidney, Pinto, Black, and Red beans. However, it is unanimous that lentils (all colors) are healthy and a staple for hamsters.

Some of the mixes also have dried fruit, or raisins, which should only be fed as treats and in moderation. These foods I would list as junk food. That includes Kaytee and Econutrition.

Another disturbing food trend is cane molasses is the food. Obviously, this is a sugar that is used to sweeten the food and bind the food together. Honey is also used in this way. While companies will tell you to be wary of Sunflower seeds that cause obesity, many forget all the unnatural sugar in your hamster’s diet. Sugar can also cause dental problems in hamsters, as well as it has been reported sticky substances like honey and chocolate can actually get stuck to a hamster’s cheek pouches causing problems.

Ecotrition Essentials even has onions, which are harmful to hamsters!

Then there are seeds. Seeds should be one of the main staples, but there is a word of caution as well because Sunflower and pumpkin seeds can cause obesity. So when added to a mix, it should be proportionate. This however, does not apply to millet and flax seed, which should be usually in a 2:1 ratio to other seeds. You will see most of the mixes either have flax or millet (sometimes both) as a large ingredient in their pellets or mixes.

Rice is also important to include in your hamster diet. White, wild, and brown are all included favorites. Rice can be served either raw, or cooked.

What about protein? Hamsters are omnivores and actually do require protein. This is another reason why most companies use soy. However, a hamsters protein intake can be regulated by feeding cooked eggs, a mealworm, dog biscuits (with approved ingredients), and nuts.

You can offer nuts in your diet (Not almonds however) and most people recommend 1 nut a day (two for a Syrian). This is a great treat and protein source. Dog biscuits, usually made of egg, are another great way to get the protein in.

Another main staple in the pellets is the presence of hay, either timothy or alfalfa. Hamsters can be given loose, soft hay and will often use it as nesting material and nibble on it as well. If a hamster doesn’t eat loose hay, it can become a problem and that is the main reason why pellets are so great. However, when your pellets are full of other harmful ingredients, it does more harm than good. Oxbow provides healthy pellets, and Hazel Hamster, the most recommended food for dwarfs, has alfalfa pellets in their seed mix.

The main argument against making own mixes is because it is so difficult to get a crude analysis (fat, protein, fiber, ect) of your mix. However, this argument is also presented without the reason as mixes are whole and raw, and pellets are compounded and baked, so there isn’t a need for this analysis as long as the mix is balanced. For instance, most pellets have to be fortified with vitamins and minerals because compounding them and baking them (not to mention storage of pellets) makes them lose said vitamins. It is quite known that pellets lose nutritional value over time.

What should you include in a mix? A proportionate mix is key. This proportion varies with what size you decide to buy in bulk. I buy my mixes in ¼-1lb mixes. When you take a tablespoon of mix, you should see 1-2 seeds, 1 nut, 1-2 bean (if you chose to add them), 1-3 split peas (if you chose to add them) and the rest rice and millet. This is much generalized, and you should consult your local veterinarian and research to find your own mix.

I include in my own personal mix which are all organic and found in my local health food store in bulk. All are raw and unsalted. I am not saying that my mix is the best mix for hamsters, but through my own research I have tried to gather the best ingredients for a balanced diet.

White and Yellow Millet, Ground Oat Grouts, Wheat Flakes, Buckwheat, Flax Seed, Sesame seed, Green/Red/Brown Lentils, Niger seed, White Rice, Wild Rice, Brown Rice, Sunflower seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Walnuts, Cracked Pistachios, Split peas, Chickpeas (Garbonzo) beans, Mung Beans, Wheat/Rice puffs

(I would admit to maybe forgetting an ingredient or two)

I also feed my hamster fresh greens every night. He gets loose timothy/orchard hay, dried dandelions and roses, cranberry/egg dog biscuits, and occasional mealworms.

I hope this has been a bit informative and it is a work in progress, so there will be updates and I am sure corrections.
