You'rekidding!?!?!

Do it, Jen! Do it!!!! You'll have no regrets, I promise.

It's suggested that they not be kept in a wire floorcage.

Until full grown, they should have unlimited amounts of feed with atablespoon or so of calf mana as the feed doesn't provide them withenough protein.

Showrabbits (a flemish breeder on the board) said flemish generallygrow for about a year to a year and 1/2, and then after that, that theygrow slowly for 3-4 years.

Keep their nails trimmed as the weight of the rabbits can often result in a broken nail if you don't stay on it.

A dog crate is what I have for Cali, but I imagine I'll be gettingsomething else or adding onto it as she's a particularly big girl.

The sooner you work on picking her/him up and getting him/her used tobeing handled, the better as they only grow and grow and it gets harderand harder.

Get that rabbit!! 8 weeks old?? I'm jealous.

P.S. I got the biggest dog crate youcan buy on ebay for $60 - 2 doors, and it is brand new.Compared to other prices I've seen, that seemed to be the best, unlessof course you can get to a garage sale or you know someone who has anextra crate.

Post pictures as soon as you can.

Freecycle might be a good place to find a crate :)

oh, and...

Congratulations!

This is what Pamnock said...

Sore hocks on wire flooring would be the biggest concern, butCali isn't on wire floor :) Larger breeds canalso be more prone to tumors and abscesses under the chin, but I'veseen those far more in bucks than in does.

Plenty of excercise to keep her muscles and bones strong is also important.

This was Showrabbits note to me when I asked what I should watch out for with Flemish.

Flemish are a pretty hardy breed. Like pam said the hocks should be ofmajor concern. Even though you dont have them on wire you should becareful the weight alone can do it.

There are alot of problems that occur due to improper handling. Likepicking them up wrong ect. Although I am not sure on this fact I have adoe that was picked up wrong by somebody at a rabbit show. They got herout of her carrier without asking me and I didnt even know the people.I ran over and jumped cages to get to her but I didnt get to her intime. She was screaming and I checked her over and found thatshenow had a hernia right where the person had their hand onher stomach. The people around were just as concerned and we all agreedthat it was in the exact spot where the person had their hand and itwas a very very noticable hernia. We had just gotten done showing andthe judge that we had had not handled her bad at all and would ofnoticed this hernia. I believe that the way this person picked her upgave her the hernia. The show officails escorted this person out of thebuilding but the harm was already done. I have also heard stories ofbroken backs by peole picking them up and not soporting them esspacailytheir back ends.

Other problems can be broken toenails because of their weight. I havehad them break toenails when they step onto their resting boards eventhought their toenails were not long. This is more comon in the olderrabbits. Broken tails is also common but that may be because ofimproper handling agian but it does not take much when they are big jrsor srs and they dont have the bone mass yet.

Fine bone can be a problem of concern but that is something that youjust watch for when you get a rabbit and if they have fine bone withcareful handling they should be fine.

The larger breeds can have more problems with arthiritus when they get bigger because of the size and wieght that they have.

Flemish giants usauly do not have weight problems/ notice how i sayusauly. All breeds of rabbits can have weight problems, but they arenot prone to getting realy over weight. They can have weight to thembut they usauly dont get too much for their frame to handle.

Also another problem that they tend to have is getting too spoiled! Those poor poor flemmies get way too spoiled sometimes and they realydo not deserve that. Just because they are like big teddy bears that isno reason why they should have to be tortured with all that love. Geessome people i tell ya. LOL JK

Yeah!!! More Flemish are joining the herd!

Handle them early in life so when they get ginormous, they will be usedto you - they do grow kind of fast! As for food - I feed minefree choice pellets because he's actually on the light side at 14pounds.

I gotaVERY large dog crate/cage so he is able tomove around comfortably and even stand upright in it with noproblem. His litter box is a 20 gallon Rubbermaid containerwith a hole cut into the side.

Ok, I have an absolutely huge dog crate...for a full grown, 212 lb great dane. Will that be too big for a baby?

Carolyn, where do you get the calf manna? My little ones(Orion and Spahy) eat Manna Pro food, and I know PetsMart has asupplement made by them, is this what you are talking about?

I really want one. I have to decide if I want a doe or a buck, I'm thinking I want a buck.

Jen

Not sure if the calf mana you're referring to is the same, Jen.

I can get a 5 lb. bag at Agway and it goes a long way. I wastold by Pamnock and Showrabbits to go with the straight CalfMana.

Check the protein % on your current food. Mostdon't have enough in them for Flemish.

I really hope you get one. The crate you have forthe baby isn't too big. I'm sure the little one will love theroom. As Amy and Jenniblu said, Yay! AnotherFlemish in thefamily!

What a tough decision you have to make...girl or boy. I should have such problems.

-Carolyn

Purina makes a knock off version of Calf Mannacalled Animax but I think the smallest bag is 50lbs. Lucklyfor me, you can also feed it to otheranimals likerats and chickens.

OMG, I could sleep in this thing. We have 2 and my lab/rottieis in 1, he has tons of room, I swear 3 of him could stay inthere. I'm going to measure it later. I think Iwould put a shelf or 2 in it. Probably just 1 when he waslittle, then bigger.

I think flemish fever is going aroundtoo. I just talked to the breeder and I'm really happy withwhat she said. I think I'll be getting one fromher. I have to arrange to pick one, hopefully thisweekend.

I don't know where I'm going to put the cage LOL. I might sethim up in something a little different in my bedroom until I getmoved. Then I'll either keep him in with the other bunniesand ferrets or I'll try to keep him somewhere downstairs so he can haveinteraction and access to his cage. I think that will be thebest idea, although I spend a lot of time with the others, so maybe inthat room. I'll have to really think on that one.I'm just really excited.

I'd love to have a flemish, but since I live in an urban area, normal sized bunnies will have to do.;)

FLEMISH FEVER IS ALLLLIIIVVVEEE!!!

You, Too, Nichole!?!?? You'll love it!

What color are you partial towards?

Dajeti2 researched the Flemish breed 9 months before she got one. She'scontinued to follow every lead she can on this breed - - which has nowturned into years of research.

She's an excellent resource in the area of breeders, vets that specialize in them, etc.

Congratulations!!

Another Flemish joing the family. This Rocks! I vote Buck butthen I'm sorta biased right now lol. Most feed stores and TSC carryCalfManna. Every one else pretty much answered everything. I am soexcited, this is so awesome for you. You have wanted one for a longtime, this is cool.

Tina

I'm definitely going to get a buck. Istill want to talk to her a little before making a final decision, butI'm pretty sure.

Ok, is calf manna a powder or a pellet or what? At somewherelike TSC do I find it in the rabbit section or where?

Thanks,

Jen
