when i joined rabbits online, i had 2 buns, a jersey woolie named rue and a flemmie mix named nut puppet. summer before last was record-breakingly hot. we had 63 days above 100*, with at least 85% humidity. 27 of those days were above 110*. it was insane. our crappy ac in our crappy house just couldn't deal with it. the buns had chilled ceramic tiles, damp cloths, frozen 2 liter water bottles, fans, and frozen "fruit pops". we did everything we could think of to keep them cool, but the heat still got poor nut puppet. our whole family was devastated, especially our little girl. we made the tough decision to rehome rue so the same thing didn't happen to him.
it's been two years now and a lot has changed. we've (thankfully!) left oklahoma behind and now live in alaska, where we plan on retiring. i've been thinking about getting another rabbit ever since we moved, but even checking craigslist, the pound, and the pet stores a couple times a week, i just hadn't found "the one". until last week. folks, meet melody elizabeth (named by the same small child who named nut puppet)!
my daughter (who just turned 6) looked at me the night we brought her home and said, "mommy, i still really miss nut puppet, and i'm sad he died, but i'm sure glad we have a bunny again."
