Hi I'm Deaners. I have lurked on this site a bit before and decided now was the time to join. My husband and I currently have two new young bunnies. Pearl is a 3 month old French Lop girl and George is a 6 month old Holland Lop boy. We also had a Mini Lop named Munches who passed away in August 2011. She was approximately 11 years old. We miss her dearly, but are thankful she had a long, happy, pampered life with us.

We took Pearl and George to the vet this week and found out Pearl has a parasite and George's pre-neuter bloodwork came back with abnormally high liver results. The vet is retesting a fresh poop sample to see if he has parasites too. From everything I'm reading it sound like its Coccidia. I hope that's all it is and we can get both our buns treated and healthy. The vet put Pearl on sulfamex-something or other.

Anyway I hope to get to know everyone on here. And look forward to having some nice rabbit chats.

I can't remember what the name of the parasite was. Something with a C. I will ask again when she calls with the results from George later today.

You cant find e.cuniculi in a fecal float which is what you would find coccidia in.

Welcome to the forums I also have a French lop named Franklin :)

Got the results back from the vet. George's poop didn't show any parasites.
The parasite Pearl has is called e.stiedae. It is a form of coccidia. The kind that attacks the liver.
I still think this is what George has.
The vet wants to do an ultrasound on him at a cost of around $500 since his poop sample came back negative.
I'm inclined to give him the coccidia meds and then redo the blood work.
I don't what to do.

Hello I am new also. I find that extreme that the vet wants to do an ultrasound. What is he looking for exactly?

Welcome! Sorry to hear about the new problems with your babies. Glad to know though that your giving them the care they need. Im sure they will be fine in no time!
Also, Im very sorry to hear about your Munches passing. 11 years is a long time and Im sure she was super spoiled with parents like you! Some bun's arnt that lucky.
Hope to see some pics soon

edit:
p.s. I think thats a bit crazy $500 for an ultrasound? I would maybe consider what you were thinking and give him some of the meds to and do another poop check. Thats just me though.

I would treat him with the same medicine for the other bunny and then recheck the bloodwork. Sometimes eggs aren't so easy to find In a fecal float. If the buns live together and are around each others fecal matter the parasites would be easily be transferred between the two bunnies. That's why when we have litters of puppies at the vet I work at and if one has worms we treat every puppy and the mom. But you must realize that you could be hurting george if it's really not a parasite hurting his liver and it turns out to be something else. I would talk to the doc again and see if you can just treat George but don't wait forever to do the ultrasound if the medicine isn't helping

Hi all. Thanks again for the great advice. I spoke with the vet again. She has agreed to put George on the same meds as Pearl. We will see what happens in about a week.

Here are some pics:
