How does bunny catch ear mites?

Does he have to be in contact with something that has them. Would he get this if he is indoors?

Peaches has been scratching quite a bit (but maybe not to excess - who knows)

They can be found on the grass, or travel in on hay. Look in his ears if you can. Indoor bunnies can get them even if they haven't been exposed to other rabbits.
