One of my bunnies was in stasis last week and the vet prescribed cholestyramine "just in case" he showed mucus in his stool. I got it filled to have it on hand, since the previous batch I had was from 2005. Haven't needed to use it, but have a couple of questions for future reference:
1. The expiration date on the old batch was 2007. It seems like this is the sort of stuff that doesn't really expire -- could I have used that batch in a pinch?
2. The cholestyramine has a label that says "contains sucrose" and it appears that you have to give a pretty large amount of it. That seems a bit strange when we're told over and over that sugars will feed clostridium and not to give sugars to a stasis bunny. Is this a case of the benefits outweighing the risks, or are there other types you can get without sugar added?
Thanks for any enlightenment!
