Im really just hooked one. shes an Angora Rabbit

are they hard to take care of? i would be a first time owner..
anything i should know for an
Angora Rabbit?!
thanks!

they require a LOT of grooming because they have such long hair

i know angoragrl has two, but i haven't seen her on the boards for a while.

They are a lot of work if you want to keep them in coat for competition. But for keeping them as a pet (and not having to worry about coat quality, density, length) you can probably get away with brushing them out every week or two. People who buy pet quality off of me are always advised that they can always clip their rabbits down if grooming gets to be too much work. ([ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8Ba5e9qfiA&feature=related[/ame] --love this video) When an angora rabbit is cut back, grooming between shearing is really minimal, if at all needed. You can generally do this ever 2-3 months.

Aside from coat care, I think angora rabbits are some of the sweets rabbits around. They are often extremely tolerant of human handling, and very affectionate. I know I'm biased, but I absolutely love them!

Wooled coats should be blown, not brushed. Jersey Woolies, American Fuzzy Lopsand French Lops are generally easier to care for because they have more guard hairs and less tendency to matt. Satin Angoras can be a nightmare because of the finer coats. English Angoras have very dense, soft coats and are one of the more difficult wooled breeds to maintain. Shearing is recommended if you don't plan on showing them.

As a breeder with a barn full of Satin and English angora I can say the Satin is definitely the easier of the two breeds to care for.:p Their coats aren't as dense and have more guard hairs than the English, however both are fairly silky and if you aren't going to use them for fiber I do recommend regular hair cuts.

BTW I found these videos on You Tube and I think they are a great source for anyone thinking about getting an angora. Kudos to bunnycentral.
