Last night was a rough night. Timmy had major balance issues so we brought him to the emergency vet... I was reluctant to because they know nothing about small animals.. And of course it was a waste ot time and money. They saw him and opted he be put to sleep. I called my vet as soon as they opened and they had a cancellation at 4:30 and we took it. Timmy is on two different antibiotics and I also asked for some critical care just incase he's having trouble eating tonight. Anyway, she said we'll give it a few days but if we don't see any improvement by Sunday... It would be in Timmy's best interest to consider having him put down. He's still in really good spirits and I know he's a little fighter. Here's to hoping the meds work.

How can those vets be so insensitive? What a horrible thing to suggest if your little guy is still being himself! There is an alternative to every thing...Why not crack a book open, or actually consult with another vet who might have more knowledge than themselves? Too afraid to learn something new...?

Sorry, I will get off of my soap box now... That just irritates me to no end when "professionals" don't want to admit they do no know what to do and don't what to ask for help. I asked a vet, who was a friend of mine, about stuff like that. She said that their oath "was to do no harm." That is why some vets take the worst option first, because they do not know what would be a safe treatment.

My prayers are with you and Timmy. I hope this medicine works so that every one involved has a chance to learn from Timmy's healing. If anything, read other forum posts to see if anything is similar and take that information with you for the next visit. At least you can educate yourself...

Poor Timmy. :( Meant to respond to this when you first signed on -- thought I did but my post isn't there, oh well.

Please keep us up to date. We're about to move to a new server (any minute now!) so we likely be offline for awhile (possibly from tonight through to tomorrow afternoon, although it may be on and off).

Please sign up to our Yahoo Group if you can. We're hoping everybody will keep in touch there.

It's http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Rabbits

Good luck to Timmy.

Thanks for the warm thoughts, guys.

myheart- Timmy is himself, yes, but he's having alot of trouble with balance and rolls sometimes, too, which is why the emergency vet suggested what he did. They only have a few vets on over night and they aren't small animal specialists- I suggested a few things that it could be and the treatments, but they didn't feel comfortable doing something they weren't sure about, and I understand that. I was glad to be able to get to my normal vets anyway.

Timmy's doing ok today. I think he was doing so poorly because of the excitement of going to emergency then to another vets. His temperature was a little high at the emergency, so that could have upset him when we were still at home, causing his balance to be so off. He's quite calm and taking his medications like a big boy, as well as the critical care. He's stil feeding himself, just not as much as normal because he's not feeling well, so he's getting the CC 2-4 times a day to help him keep his strength and weight up. I'd love to keep a water dish with him, but he likes to throw them, so he's got his bottle available at all times, and me and my friend are offering him water from a dish every few hours just incase- So far, though, he's not become dehydrated.

Thanks for all the warm thoughts and words, everyone. I'll keep you updated.

Sometimes there are some really tough patches when treating these animals but when they have the will and the fight in them we should fight it tooth and nail. I have with my boy more than once.

There are newer treatments that not all vets know. Some vets might not even try without a fightbut they are there.

Sunday there is a chat going on where I will be talking about Ringo. I would love if you could make it. New Episode of The Rabbit Show This Sunday!

If there is any fight in him don't give up.

Ali

Thanks for the advice, JadeIcing. He's got alot of fight in him... He's still eating, he'll eat his greens in minutes and I'm watching him with little bits of hay because he still does roll every once in a while so I don't want him scratching his eye. He's also eating the critical care and still taking his medicine with no problems.. He's such a great little guy, I think he's going to be ok.

Twitch,

Most of the members here know of my two special needs boys, Holiday & Fiesta. They did not have head tilt, but splayed legs (the worst my vet has ever come across) and she does do over the phone consulations. I'm in Missouri but if you'd like her number so you could speak with her I'd be happy to give you her information.

She is a HRS approved vet, works with alternative animal medicine and used to raise/show english lops (and is a member of the ARBA) - she really has excellent credentials.

I've had a few rabbits fight headtilt - and win. They can do it - and they can pull out of it even though they may always be slightly tilted. I've had some pull out and never be tilted again.

Just remember - it will take time and lots of work on both your part and their part. You may need to handfeed them for a bit and hold a bottom for them a few times per day. They may drop down to very low weights and you may get discouraged.

But keep at it. My little guy, New Hope was really bad and rolling all the time - he dropped down to about 1 pound. He's now back up to 2 pounds and 12 ounces and while he doesn't like to sit up a lot....he doesn't roll anymore and he has a great life here with me. (New Hope is a lionhead).

This is the same thing that happen to my boy Fluffy, he could not keep his balance at all would continuously roll over. Was kept at the vets for 2 nights then brought home with 3 different meds. He got worse before he got better. The vet never gave up on him. ;)

Baytril by mouth every 12h. Mexloxicam by mouth every 24h. Longysil under the skin every 48h.

When he retrurned home he still a balance problem when u set him down or even just walking around for a while he would roll over but he get up after words. It's been 8 months now and he is doing really good. Head i up and walking fine, but is still runs in circles a bit.

Hope your bunny does well.

Timmy is on Baytril every 12h and fenbendazole every 24h, but no injections.

Yeah.. I'm not expecting his balance to be perfect any time soon. We do neck stretched and massages every day, though, so hopefully that will help the tilt. I rolled up small blankets and put them on the sides of his cage with 3 inches of carefresh on the entire bottom of the cage (litter training will have to wait till he's better) and then there's a sheet covering all of that which also goes to the outside of his cage up to the top so he's not too visually stimulated, and so my cat can't bug him (she sure does miss being able to give nose kisses) His new gams is pulling the sheet back into his cage at one side and hiding under it. The only problem is the carefresh being on plastic is slippery and he's having a hard time with balance because of that. I'm going to fix it up so he can't pull the sheet in and then give him another blanket to hide under, that way there's no slipping but he can still play peek a boo. He's doing really well today.

I'm proud to announce Timmy seems to be doing much better so far today!

Normally when it's time for his meds and his critical care, he gets really excited and rolls a few times and then rolls once or twice when he goes back in his cage, but today he didn't roll once! Also... I'll get my friend to confirm it when he gets over here, but I think his tilt is a little less than it was last night. Thanks for all the warm wishes and good vibes!!

Crossing my fingers.
