Breed Description and Origins:

75% of points are focused on Body Type in the American Fuzzy Lop. They should be brick-like in appearance, compact and cobby, as wide as they are tall when posed. They should feel smooth and well muscled. The head, which is covered in normal fur, should appear massive and be set closely on the shoulders- giving the appearance of having no neck. The head is round with a flat face. Ears should also be normally furred and hang straight down along side the head, just behind the eyes. The wool is dense, but not overly soft like an Angora. It should have plenty of guard hairs for ease of grooming- with a minimum length of 1.5 inches.

This breed has close ties to the Holland Lop. Small, wooled, lop-eared rabbits were showing up in Holland Lop litters after French Angoras were bred into the Hollands to improve their fur quality. Patty Greene-Karl and several other breeders decided these fuzzy Hollands should become their own breed. After several years of trying, the American Fuzzy Lop was accepted by the ARBA in 1988.

How to pose:

Since this breed is a compact breed, it should be posed with its back toes even with the front of its hips and its front legs even with its shoulders. Its head should be up off the table, but not so much that the rabbit is posed up onto its toes.

Breed Specifics:

Fuzzy lops tend to be very laid back rabbits with sweet personalities. An ideal adult fuzzy lop coat should require very little maintenance- needing regular brushing only when molting. Fuzzy Lops tend to be good mothers, but since the dwarfing gene is present in the breed, litter sizes are small and peanuts are a possibility.

Mixables:

Fuzzy Lops are becoming more common in the pet trade, as their fur is much easier to maintain than any of the Angoras. Since the wool gene is recessive- both parents must have the wool gene to have babies with wool. This means many fuzzy lop mixes have normal wool. A rabbit between 3-5 pounds with thick, rounded, lopped or ‘airplane’ ears and a broad head may be a sign of a Fuzzy Lop mix.
