My other half and I are concidering taking on a rescue rabbit who is very unwanted and has health problems. He has been waiting 2 months for a new home and so far no-one has shown any interested what so ever in him as he is astheticly displeasing.

He is a 6 month cross breed and long story short he has blocked tear ducts. The vets have tried several different times and ways to unblock his ducts but it just isnt possible. They are saying that he has to have his eyes cleaned every day and attend a vet every 3 months to check him over.

Apart from that he seems in every other resepect to be a bright healthy bunny and very sweet natured.

The crux of the mater is that at this time we did not want to take on any other buns BUT this one is a special case and we are seriously concidering if we are able to offer him a forever home. The thing we are concerned about at present is the vet bills that may result from him condition. The check-up and any antibiotics we are ok with but we do have concerns as to whether in the long term he could develop more serious problems down the line - especially as an insurance company wouldnt cover this.

We have to concider whether we are financially able to offer "Percy" (as he is known at the moment) the care that he will need, he wouldnt be our only pet, we have 4 cats and 2 bunnies already and have another "financial drain" happening in the coming months.

We would like to take him with our eyes open and by making an informed decision so if anyone has any experience with a bunny with a tear duct problem can you please post.

We are going to contact the people who have "Percy" at the moment and ask if they would concider allowing my VERY trusted vet to look over his notes and give her opinion on his condition but they may not wish to do this so the more infomation I can gather the better.

Thanks everyone

P.S - Sorry I havent posted in a long time, I havent had proper internet access for 2 months, but I am ever hopeful that I will get it sorted out soon. -- Grace and Louis are now fully bonded and living happily together.

I think it would be wonderful if you could take him in. I would contact a specialist about the eye problems to see if surgical correction is an option.

I think if you can take him on, that would be a fantastic thing to do. I agree with Pam about contacting a specialist for further information. Best of luck! Maybe someone has an experience they can share.

I have one w/ a chronic weepy eye, been that way since he was tiny. Treated several times to no avail. He's not developed any other issues along the way.

I hope you figure out what's best and give this lil guy a forever home.

Could you work something out with the shelter where you could take him to a doctor you chose to have a consult and then decide whether or not you would want to take him? This way you would be able to get him to a doctor of your choosing that you feel comfortable that is rabbit savy, and they will possibly get a bun adopted that is going to be harder to have adopted out because of this problem.

Also read the Library Health section part under the title "Eye Problems". There you'll find several medical articles explaining the issue, as well as threads of RO members, who have dealt with the runny eyes problem in the past.
