It's time everyone......

I made the appointment for Einstein to get neutered on March 30th! I am excited for this to happen but I am VERY nervous. I do trust the vet. He is very knowledgeable and knows rabbits. For directions I have to drop Einstein off between 8:00am-8:30am and bring some food as well. I was happy when the vet said I didn't have to fast him. So I can feed him the morning of. I was so nervous and I emailed him about pain medications and he responded with this "I generally give metacam before surgery and send home 2 days of it for after surgery. I think that untreated pain in rabbits is not good for their GI health, so I try to make sure that they are as comfortable as possible." I do trust him but I am scared.

Is there anything else I should do before the surgery or after? What is good aftercare instructions? I plan on washing everything in his pen while he is getting neutered.

Thank you :D

I was just as nervous as you!
Just two weeks ago I got Leo neutered and Macy was spayed about a month ago.
After going through both I can tell you neutering is much easier on rabbits and they bounce back super quick!

Just be sure to keep things clean as you said.
When Leo came home he wasn't real keen on hay or pellets but still ate most of his veggies. I did give him extra veggies on the day of his surgery so that he would have things moving, but by the second day he was eating pellets and hay no problem.
Check the site twice a day, and keep him confined to his cage for a week.
I'm not sure what else... Like I said they bounce back fast!

I use woodstove pellets for his litterbox, should I continue to use the pellets for litter or should I start using carefresh? Im nervous about both, I am nervous about pellets because it will be too rough for the site and i'm nervous for the carefresh because it will stick to the site.

Also he is a lionhead. So I am wondering that will he be completely shaved?

When my rabbit got spayed I put towels down instead of bedding and used newspaper in her litter box. Just til she was healed up a bit. That might not be the best way and it requires (minimum) daily cleaning but it worked for us! I hope everything goes smoothly and good for you for getting it done!

I always use yesterday's news for litter... It's recycled newspaper cat litter and that's what I used after the neuter. Honestly as long as it's clean and dry it probably won't irritate the site.

Sorry for double posting but I hadn't answered the shave part.
They typically shave just around the incision.

I would stay with the litter your currently using, because it's a heavy litter, he'll be able to sit above it while in his tray so it won't irritate the site, anything fine like carefresh or newspaper has the potential to be scratchy, or like you mentioned, stick to the wound. Plus you don't want to go changing things up on him too much.

Bandit recovered relatively quickly, just make sure he's eating, offer him hay by hand if he's not. And just keep him hydrated too. If he has surfaces in his cage that he can jump on to, it's a good idea to take those out or restrict his access to them so he can't injure the surgery sight trying to jump up/down.

Everything sounds promising, the vet sounds very knowledgeable :)

Hello! I spoke with the vet today as well and I was saying that they want me to leave Einstein there most of the day so they are able to monitor him and feed him and give him water to make sure he is okay :D

I was super nervous when Bouncealot went in for his neutering, too, but he dealt with it just fine. At my best guess, he's a Lionhead/Jersey Wooly X, and they just shaved the incision area. He started growing fur back in that area right away, unlike poor Mabari after her spay -- she had a bald tummy for ages!
