What kind of finish to use on my woodend Hutch?

This hutch is almost one year old and it looks like it is 10 years old. What should I use, anyone know? Please help:? This is what the house looked like
What would be a safe finish to use?

We put "Thompson's Water Seal" on ours and then years later we decided to use normal paint on them. We just took the buns out for the afternoon when it was warm and breezy, put finish on, let them thoroughly dry and air out and then put bunnies back in. With the pain, we just didn't paint inside really in case they ate it.
