I was driving homelate after havingdinner with a friend, and drove around a roundabout when I sawsomething on the road - a wild rabbit sitting hunched up.

I had to swerveas it was2 footfrom theedge of the pavement, and so did some other cars.I couldn'tleave it tobe hit, so I doubled back and stopped the car, sodid a couple in a van at the same time.

It had been hit by a car and had a broken front leg and blood in it'seye but it was still alive - OMG. We didn't know what to do, I couldn'tleaveto die in the coldas it was still alive andsuffering. There was no way I could have endedit's misery, and the guy in the van said he couldn't either.

I picked it up, and it struggled a bit, and I wrapped it in a blanketand put it in a box in my car and sped home. Husband got a fright whenI burst in.Called emergency night vet - I would have paid foranything, and took bun into Edinburgh, 20 minute drive atabout midnight. I was so upset.

Vet said there was no way it would survive and she was going to have toeuthanise it straight away to end it's pain. (Vet said no charge by theway). It was obviously stunned, but not distressedasit was sitting still, and it must have had brain injury with the bloodin it's eye. I was so sad and bawled my eyes out all the way home.

I know I did the best for it, and it spent it last minutesonearth with people who cared for it.I can't get over how manypople must have driven past it and saw something had happened to it,but just left it there.

God bless it's wee soul, may it run and binky free at Rainbow Bridge and I'll collect it on my way to Heaven.

That rabbit wasso blessed to have you come along. You helped bring him to a place freefrom pain and suffering as difficult as it was for you, and I think youdid a wonderful thing :hug2

Well done for taking it off the road.My dad found a hare in the road outside our house one time and took itto the vet but it was put to sleep too. I don't think there is evermuch they can do for wild animals once they are hurt sobadly. At least you made sure its life was ended peacefullyand humanely.

By the way where do you live that is a twentyminute drive from edinburgh? Before I moved into edinburghfor university I lived in east Lothian near tranent and we were 20minutes from edinburgh. Just wondered if you are from thesame place as me.

Good Job.
I am sure he will be passing the wordabout you to the other bunnies at Rainbow Bridge. :D

I see many rabbits on my way to work in themornings. I always slow down when I pass the spotwhere I see them, and sure enough, one would runacross the road in front of me.

Rainbows! :)

:sosad I am sorry you had to go thru that butyou did your best and prevented that rabbit a lot of suffering. It wasnice of the vet not to charge you too.

Thank you so much guys, I guess I was meant tomeet my friend where I did last night to drive that route home. Ibelieve sometimes you are put in places you are meant to be at certaintimes. I've thought about that bun a lot today - I know I did what hadto be done. I'm glad I stopped.

Katy G - my husband and I live in Tranent!

I think you did the right thing. blessyou! I just wanted to share something, briefly with you all.A sort of similar story. We live next to a ditch, and in theearly evening one time, my husband and I heard the horrible sound arabbit makes when it's dying (that crying sound). Well, bothof us ran into the ditch, chased off the cat that had attempted to killthis little cottontale, and my husband rescued it. It had abroken leg (I can't remember if it were front or back), but he made amakeshift splint for the rabbit, and gently put her in Thor's old cage, and put the cage in with Thor in her outside fenced in area.It was so very heartbreakening, because she had lost so much blood, andthere was so much more damage. The pain inher eyes wasunbearable. But, for a brief time (very brief) she was with 2 peoplewho really cared so much for her, and Thor was very concerned forher. She did not live long, but she was loved and safe duringthis time.

Hey thats really weird. There is hardly anyonescottish on this forum and we are both from the same place!Tranent is a really small town for anyone else who is reading this.

What a lucky rabbit to have had you spot it.

Even though she had to be put to sleep, at least you were there to haveher pain ended quickly, instead of suffering on the side of that roadfor who knows how long.

Aww, that story made me cry. :bunnyangel:

You did a truely wonderful thing by helping that poor little soul. Youcould have just kept on driving, like so many of the other drivers thathad passed that poor little bunny, but you stopped to help it. Thatbunny died knowing that someone out in that big world cared for it. :rip

Instead of that bunny having to spend the whole night in the cold, slowly and painfully watching it's life slip away, it died in a warmplace, with no pain, and had help to be escorted up to bunny heaven.
