My boyfriend and i are planing on buying a house in about a year and a half (after im done school), and i wanted to get into breeding show rabbits. I was thinking either Flemish Giants or Californians since they are not very common around here.

How would i get started? I dont know of any rabbit shows around here. I dont even know if they have them.

Im starting my research now so that i have at least a year and a half before i can even consider getting any. I know that i would have to have excellent quality pedigreed show rabbits, but i have no idea where i would get them.

Also, i plan on doing a survey to see which breed of rabbit people like best.(both for show and pet). Oh and i LOVE genetics. That will probably be my favorite part.

Does anyone have any websites/advice for me? I know their are a lot of risks, and it is very time consumming and expensive.(i also know that you cant make profit out of it. i just want to help better the breed!)

The very first step is to join the ARBA http://www.arba.net/

With membership, you'll receive a subscription to the Domestic Rabbits publication as well as a rabbit/cavy guidebook that is well worth the cost of membership. A must read! It'll help immensely with all the questions you have in starting out as a rabbit breeder.

You'll find a show listing on the ARBA website and also check out the judges education material on the ARBA site for additional information on various breeds.

The eighth edition of "Rabbit Production" is also an excellent book to read.
