Our 7 year rabbit has recently had three dental procedures done. (past three months). He has stopped eating his normal food and has been through a number if tests to try and find the cause.Dental problems was diagnosed and unfortunately a bit of liver damaged due to the bad eating. He has been through Metacam/ Petcam etc and is still getting Critical Care daily as well as a liver subelement. I have just found the pain meds makes him extremely tired...and he seems ok without it. The poor eating has unfortunately not changed very much. Our vet just say it is due to old age and not much more can be done but to keep him comfortable.
My question today is about his sudden watery eyes. Especially on the one side.
Have heard it might have something to do with roots touching the tear glands but acc to the vet, these problems should have stopped by now?
Only one exotic vet in our area. South Africa unfortunately does not really cater for rabbits as pets.
Is there possibly some help or meds for teary eyes. My heart breaks for him and i so wish there was someone here that could help. I hope he does bot have pain... (Only soft grinding of his teeth when i pat him)
Our little tripod and myself will appreciate any input... Even though it might not be too positive.

Thank you-

My heart goes out to him. It does sound like it might be teeth roots making his eyes water. It could also be a blocked tear duct. It seems like you might need to go back to the vets to get some meds for it. Also, the metacam might help him as it stops inflamation. I would start giving metacam again and see if it helps his eyes any.

Does he get to go outdoors in an exercise pen or anything? Fresh air and sunshine and grass under his feet for a few hours might really perk him up and make him feel better.

Thank you! We are going to vet tomorrow although my hopes are not very high. I don't think they know what to tell me anymore (and they certainly cannot do another dental ? Previous procedure under anesthetic was a month ago )
I will start with the Metacam again and see how it goes from there. Thanks .
Albert has an outside hutch as well but is free to go were ever he wants to.
Usually he prefers the lounge were he has a lovely "nest" under our coffee table . Hay is always close by but he just plays with it. When we are not at home, he is locked inside the house or inside his hutch where he just sleeps most of the time. Late afternoon though he chooses the grass. He use to love eating from the lawn. Hasn't done this in 2/3 months.

Thank you again for caring. This is a wonderful group ! One learns so much.
