Breed Description and Origins:

The original color of the Tan rabbit was black. First known descriptions of the breed date back to 1887 in Derbyshire, England. Originally, Tans were a much larger than todays English type Tans. The Blue Tan was developed at the turn of the century and these were the only two accepted colors until the 1920’s when the Chocolate Tan was developed. It is assumed that it came about by crossing a black Tan and a chocolate Havana. Shortly long after that the Lilac Tan came into being by crossing the chocolate factor with the blue.

The Tan fanciers formed the National Tan Rabbit Specialty Club and recognize all four colors in the Tan - these being Black, Blue, Chocolate and Lilac.

How to pose:

The Tans are not posed, but judged while allowing the rabbit to move and pose on its own, so that all markings can be seen and evaluated.

Breed Specifics:

Considered a hardy little rabbit of 4½-5 lbs. they are very friendly rabbits with a rich deep colored coat.
