EBV can trigger Lupus, which is something all lagomorphs can get.

Stress induces Lupus

Lagomorphs carry several herpesviral protiens, including EBV (Epstein-Barr virus). A closely related lymphocryptovirus (HVMNE) induces lymphoma in New Zealand White Rabbits.

Gene gp340 (the EBV membrane antigen gene) has been studied, isolated and worked with enough to scientifically prove that it can be contained and neutralized in rabbits through the recombinantvaccinia virus.

Recombinant vaccinia virus vaccine for rabbits (general info on the three viruses controlled with a vaccine) http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/229/4717/981

Back to gp340 - which is related to EBV - which can trigger Lupus (that rabbits can suffer from, an autoimmune disease that can be triggered by stress) - Subunit Rotavirus Vaccine induces immunity to several virus strains, but from there I get lost as to what type of vaccine is on the market for animals. Any research Ido goes to the SARS problem and vaccine research and development.

I've sat here foralmost two hoursgoing through links, articles, message board blurbs and online science journals and what fascinates me the most is within the last two years, an epidemic of losses of specific breeds, bloodlines and types of animal is common. Rabbits areby no means the only ones affected, but it makes me wonder what exactly could be going on as viruses progress and change in structure and nature.

From my understanding, two new vaccines are close to breaking through for livestock which can beuplifting among all of the trouble so many are facing with their animals.

Hopefully there will be a breakthrough soon that can help protect rabbits (and all other animals) that can carry such ill-effecting auto-immune disorders!

The best care in the world sometimes just isn't enough - until a cure or correction can be found. In the meantime it is good to note science is working on help for rabbits with low immune systems that can lead to stress factor deaths.
