Hi all,

I took my 11 yr old rabbit to the vet 2 weeks ago for a sore ear which ended up being a yeast infection. They gave antibiotics for a week and also an ear serum. Mr Bunny had a reaction to the ear serum and now his ear is all red, warm and flaky. I took him back to the vet last week and he has more antibiotics but they didnt say to do anything topically for his ear.

I was wondering if I could use olive oil to relieve and calm the skin on the upper inside of his ear (not down in his ear canal). Would this help the skin flaking and would it be safe? Is there anything else I could use if olive oil is not safe?

Thanks

The best thing to do would be to ask your vet, if they didn’t already mention it in the consult. Olive oil won’t really help. Can you send a picture of the ear please?

It is very costly to keep going to the vet.. Ive already had to pay $25o for the past 2 visits and I am on a pension. I cant keep paying that kind of money especially if a simple solution can be found in a natural alternative. The vets advice and product is what caused this issue so I was hoping to find a knowledgeable rabbit owner who could offer some advice. I've had this bun for 11 years and I just want to help him feel better.
The rabbit specialist vet is 45 mins away and they charge $105 consult fee. I just cant afford to take him there.

You can often just call for advice, as they’ve have already seen the rabbit, most reasonable Vets will help you to find a cost effective solution. They don’t want you to go broke caring for your pet.
I would use a simple barrier cream such as sudocrem or savlon, but make sure it is at least an hour after any drops or serum you are giving (to allow them time to work).
