shredded paper

I've read several places that people give their bunnies old phone books to scratch on. Is shredded paper in a scratch box safe for them? Is it safe to shred phone books, sales papers/adds forms newspapers, old mail, copy paper etc? They love getting in the box but I've noticed them trying to say the paper and I wanted to be sure its safe.

It depends on the ink used to print on the paper and, if it's bleached or glossy coated paper or not. Unbleached, like newspaper printed with soy ink is fine. Other printed paper is not, bleached paper is not okay and, glossy paper is not okay either. No waxed paper or anything like that.

Personally I prefer buying rice paper for rabbits that like to shred paper, it's safer.
