I went to the Zoo, again! This time, I went to the Detroit Zoo in Michigan. I wasn't expecting much (the word "Detroit" kind of set me up for failure). It was a wonderful zoo! It was very big, lovely enclosures, and a lot of animals that the Milwaukee Zoo doesn't have! I took pictures... A lot of pictures. I will probably only post one of each animal (unless I can't choose). So, enjoy the pictures, everyone!
Birds
The first set of pictures (marked with asterisks) are native bird species that just happened to settle in areas of the zoo.
Double-Crested Cormorant ***
Juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron ***
Trumpeter Swan ***
Wood Duck ***
A very blurry Barn Owl
African Pygmy Goose (adorable little bugger!)
Scarlett Ibis
Peking Robin
Vultures
Bald Eagle
Red Crowned Crane
South American Critters
Humpless Camel (Guanaco)
Capybara (I was super-excited to see these! I had never seen them before (aside from pictures). They were cute!)
South American Tapir (with an adorable schnozzle!)
Giant Anteater (I didn't know that they liked water!)
Pudu
Marsupials
Tree Kangaroo
Red Kangaroo Flyer (female) with Joey (baby)
Farm Critters
Belted Galloway Cow
Burro
Rescued Thoroughbred Stallion, named "Trio"
North American Critters
Polar Bear
Some kind of Seal
Collared Peccary (technically native to both North and South America)
Black-Tailed Prairie Dog
American Bison
Asian Critters
Przewalkski's Horse
Just a little information on this animal (and why I was super-excited to see one again): The Przewalksi's horse is considered to be the last of the truly "wild" horses. They were considered extinct in the wild for over 30 years. Thanks to captive breeding programs and reintroducing a few herds back into the wild, they were taken off of the "extinct in the wild" list, and were placed on the "critically endangered" list. It doesn't seem like a big leap, but at least there are some back in the wild.
Sichuan Takin
"Domesticated" Bactrian Camel
White-Lipped Deer
Red Panda
African Critters
Chimpanzee
Reticulated Giraffe
Grevy's Zebra
Warthog
Hippopotamus
White Rhinoceros
Lion
