We adopted Parker from a local shelter about a month after Clover left us( Dec.2007). Joy was depressed. We did some searching online & Peter found him, then named "Crikey". When we got the the shelter his size blew us away - he was huge! The picture online was very misleading, as they took it front-on, no way to see his whole body. Assumption was that they were calling him that, as in "Crikey! That's a big rabbit!" We re-named him Parker, as he'd been left in a park.
We felt like this was the right rabbit, that it was unlikely he would be adopted because of his size (17 lbs). He had been a stray, abandoned in a campground after some summer visitors went home. His face had a number of healing scars; the shelter folks told up they thought he'd been grabbed by some predator & managed to get away. But we later discovered the one in his ear contained a BB - someone had shot at him! He also had a tattoo in his other ear, so he started life as either a breeding or a test rabbit. No telling how old he was, but it's my experience that rabbits who spent time out on their own are compromised to some extent: shortened lifespan, overeating, nervousness about strange things, etc. But we had some wonderful years with him, as did Joy, until we had to let him go to the Bridge, Aug. 2012. We still feel his presence.
