There is a paper clip sitting on the desk in front of me, and it has ridges. That seems like a really good design. It probably holds papers together better than the conventional metal clips. 
The plastic V clips are really nice too; they hold papers together pretty well.
If you have more than 20 sheets of paper or so, the "binder clip" becomes a real nice thing to have. They come in several sizes, from the really cute mini, up to a huge one, that can hold together a couple books!
