Ok , some of you may know about Jenni getting pasturella. It is in one of the threads maybe on page 2 or 3. She was quite sick. Just now I heard her sneezing - a quiet sneeze. I am really worried about her. Should I get her to the vet? Or should I wait until I hear a few proper sneezes?

Canyou give us a review of the treatment protocol that she had for pasturella?

What were the drugs used,?

How long was she medicated/ ?

how long ago was she treated?

was a culture taken prior to the administration of the meds?
thanks

Maureen

I pulled up your thread ....

All the answers to your question are in this thread.

if the injection was indeed baytril ( and even if it was a one time dose of penicillin) there is a good chance of a flare-up. I dealt with this several years ago with a bun with a recurring URI. the vets here would not not use anything but baytril which was effective for the 1st few flare ups but then became virtually useless with the bun going into full blown symptoms while on it.

the injectable baytril is preferred over the oral however needs to be buffered prior to injection due to it's iirritating effect on tissue. it is really not the drug of choice which was pointed out in your previous thread.

Randy mentioned several other more effective drugs including zithromax ( azithromycin,) chloramphenical which are given orally
.In another recent thread he mention Zeniquin and Convenia

Convenia is given about once week for a rabbit per injection and is off label for rabbits but effective

First of all your vet needs to do a culturetodetermine the antibiotics that will be the most specific against the bacteiapresent in a culture
my bun responded most positively to bicillin injections which is a combo of benzathine and procaine penciallin which is given every other day subqutaneously.

A few sneezes does not mean a relapse but certainly something that you should monitor

you may need a vet who is better educated in rabbit medicine. (this can be hard to find)

You can tell them that you belong to a rabbit website where the members have vets that use a variety of different medication that are really effective. Tell the vet that people have successfully treated pasturella with other drugs. and bring the names of the drugs if he shuts you down completely you may need to look for another vet. if he listens and ask questions then possible Randy can talk to him or we can give you more info about dosing.

Some vets are open to listening .
Many vets ( unless they are truly specializing in exotic animals) are not given much education in rabbit medicine. It is because most vets have a practice comprised of cats and dogs.

Some vets do not want to admit that they are unsure of what to do and don't like a layperson behaving like we know more than them (which we sometimes do LOL)

Randy will usually agree talk toto any vet that is open to talking to him. he always wants the vet to know that he is NOT a veterinarian but has years of experience treating rabbits and wildlife at his rescue and that he works closely with very specialized and up to date vets.

My vet would not talk to Randy because he thought that he knew it all and was too proud and ordered more baytril. I was begging this guy to order zithromax but he said he would increase the dose of baytril and give it for 6 weeks. About the 3rd week my rabbit got worse than she had ever been . At this point he ordered the zithromax but would not give me a clinical dose of it which mean that she was underdosed... because she was underdosed it did not work effectively.

This was the winter of 2008 andI remember it as one of the worst of my life

Ieventually just dealt with Randy myself and was able to get the bicillin from a farm store and learned to give the injections myself.

Idon't advise this as the 1st line of attack but something to consider down the road if you cannot get the help that yu ned from your vet

When you talk to the vet don't act like a 'Know it all" but just bring up that you belong to rabbit website where there is a lot of information available

It is hard to do but may be worth it

Thanks alot.. I dont want Jenni to die on me. There is a woman in the vet and when I went to get my rabbits nails clipped, she was the one who did it. When I brought my sick boy George(RIP) up to the vet, she was the one who tryed to treat it. When I brought Jenni to the vet last month for her pasturella the same girl treated her. I think she is the specialist in exotic animals

Good luck! It sounds like she would be a good person to turn to. I would definitely ask about Convenia, azithromyacin (Zithromax), zeniquin, chloramphenicol, and penicillin. The penicillin we typically use here in the states isn't available in the UK, but there are options. Here's info about that. http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/resources/content/info-sheets/penicillin.htm

However, I think the other anbiotics mentioned usually have better success than penicillin, and I know at least Convenia is available there.

We didnt take her to the vet yet. My mam said we should wait to see how she was.

Im gonna bring her to the vet monday
