I was just wondering a few minutes ago if thereis a certain breed of rabbits that tend to just be veryfragile, die suddenly, not asimmune to sickness... or are notas hardy as others. Sorry if this is a stupid question ijustthought of it! Jess BTW Happy4th!!

In general, purebreds lack hybridvitality. There are certain breeds that are more inbred thanothers and any of those would be shorter lived, more prone to illnessand more prone to reproductive problems. The smaller the genepool, the more tendency towards genetic weakness.

The Dwarf Hotot is one breed that is especially prone to health problems due to poor nerve development in the gut.

The exact cause of sudden or "shock" deaths has not been determined asthis also happens in the wild during natural populationcycles. Domestic rabbits are more prone to sudden death after2 years of close line breeding.

So, if its so unhealthy to breed the rabbits so closely in the gene pool to make purebreds, why do they do it?

The novelty of developing something new and different . . .

Linebreeding is the only way to consistently produce the desired traitsof a particular breed. The wider the gene pool, the moreinconsistent the type in your animals.
