Hi bunnylovers,

I'm going to get this concern checked out at the vets and it's not super urgent but wanted to see if anyone with a female bunny (spayed) has felt nodules AND nipples in close proximity?

My gorgeous rex Lara has a little nipple on her left hand side belly - this was checked out at the vets about 3 months ago, I was told it was very normal and that if I squeeze it slightly, some clear fluid will come out. Lara didn't wince so obviously she didn't feel pain. It was clearly a little nipple and protruded out of the skin...

However, to the side of the nipple, about 1 cm away, UNDER the skin is a hard nodule. This is not a nipple, it does not protrude. Again, Lara shows no worry or flinching. I get her to a blissful state when I am cuddling then do my checking ;)

This nodule HAS got bigger in the 6 months since I first checked it.

Anyone got any suggestions/experiences? Is it a blocked milk duct? I woner if the vet may suggest we remove it...eeek. Hoping she doesn't have to stay overnight and it will be a short procedure.

Thanks,

Worried Bunny Mummy

I've had nodules under the skin with some of my buns, but not there. My thoughts would be it could be a tumour, abscess, cyst, or maybe something else that could be specific to the US, like warbles, but I don't know how long they take to come out.

Has it been checked by a vet?

I believe that a vet can do a needle biopsy on a nodule like that and then determine what the problem is

if it is growing you should definitely schedule a vet visit

Hi,

Actually we have had some fatty tissue grow like that. Angieluv hit that nail on the head. Normal protocol is to aspirate some fluid via a syringe and test it. If it's just fatty tissue and the fluid is clear, I would most likely consider just keeping an eye on it to make sure it doesn't start causing problems. If the is any signs of an infection, then appropriate antibiotics would be in order along with a possible biopsy.

I would certainly have it checked out. In our experience with tumors, it's been common practice to remove it, rather than to breach thecapsule allowing spread of cells that may enter the blood stream and travel to other parts of the body. The vet may prefer to remove it first, then biopsy.

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone...yes, it was checked out by two different vets. One said that it could be a blocked milk duct or mammory blockageand to keep an eye on it, with a view to getting it seen if it got bigger. He was not that concerned and said she would not be in pain. The second vet did not seem concerned and she is a vet rabbit specialist.

I will make an appointment in the coming weeks either before or after Xmas and will update this thread.

Thanks!

Any rabbit breeders know if a bun has to have a litter to have this issue with Mammory blockage anytime after? I wonder if it doesn't matter and it can just happen without ever having a litter? Interesting...:?

I hope all goes well with your bun. Keep us posted, please!;)

You can get a blocked or infected mammary gland with out pregnancy.

Sometimes false pregnancies can cause a doe to lactate. Any time you have lactation, you risk a blocked duct, especially if there is no baby to suckle.

You can also get irritation if the mammary gland gets something stuck in it, like a small piece of hay. The irritation can trigger an infection.

I'm sure there is more things that can go on with a mammary gland, those are just a few I'm aware of.

Tumor/cancer isalso acause of mammary nodulesas well asthe teats leaking fluid in a non-pregnant doe.

She wouldn't be having a false pregnancy though, since she is spayed. I think I would have it check out, like others have said. The fact that it is growing is definetly a concern.

Hi All, an update for you...

We had the nodule checked out today and to be on the safe side, itwill be fullyremoved and analysed.

The vet thought it was benign and didn't pose an immediate risk to Lara. He did agree it had increased slightly in size but not alarmingly so. He thought it was a blocked mammory gland. Again, becasue she is spayed he said there would be less risk. We're taking her back in 3 weeks time to have the procedure done.

The thing is you can never be 100% sure unless it is out and checked. We wouldn't want to leave it then find out a year later something has changed and it has spread and is incurable!

Cheers,

Ros

Glad to hear your girl is doing ok and that you will be having the lump removed. Im like you, better safe than sorry. Any kind of lump scares me since Ive dealt so much with nasty abscesses.

Keep us updated and I'll be keeping your girl in my thoughts and prayers.

Another thing, I had a Mini Rex, Angel, who had a lump near that area. Vet confirmed it was a tumour. Had it removed and after testing, confirmed it was Mammory Carcenoma. Nothing to mess with. She healed with flying colors, but passed away for unknown reasons one year later.

I hope this testing shows up benign! Keep us posted!

Oh I am so sorry about Angel, at least the lump was removed and stopped spreading. How old was she when she passed away?

Lara is about 3 years old, she came to us 8 months ago after a rough start and lots of instability in her early life. She is now treated like a Princess!

I am sooo nerous about next week (Friday)now, I feel sick!! It's for the best, I know she's going to receive good care.

Will update soon.

Update?

Thanks so much BR!

Angel was almost 8 and a half. She had the lump removed almost a year before she passed.

How is Lara? What were the results?

Hi everyone....apologies for the late response and thank you Pipp for the reminder to update the post (BTW - Pipp will post the photos for me).

Lara had the operation last Fridayand the hard nodule they were expecting to remove was actually an absess that burst upon the incision being made! the vet did not expect that at all!

So glad it is out and the area cleaned up.

Lara was able to come home 3 hours after the op becasue she came around from the general anesthetic quickly and started to eat. She was wobbly and cold but was instantly happy to smell home when we walked through the door.

I was SHOCKED at the size of the scar....4" on such a small bunny?? She's been an abolute trooper and it's healing nicely. She was licking and paying it a lot of attention so the first few nights were exhausting as me and my spouse worked 'shifts' to keep her company and to distract her from nibbling her scar!

They gave us pain medication (meloxicam) to administer every 12 hours for 3 days and antibiotcs (Chloramphenicol) again every 12 hours for 5 days to heal the scar and stop infection. She's off these now. As Lara is a house bunny with clean healthy surroundings she's unlikely to be under any great risk of external infection. My my she hated the meds and they smelt awful!

So there it is - it was an absess - could have been there over a year as we have had her 8 months and it was there (but smaller) when we got her.

Thanks for all your support everyone!! Lara is now perkier than ever :biggrin2:...(wonder if it was giving her discomfort??)

Poor bunny, those abscesses can be pretty sore. At least it's getting treated now and she's on good meds. Are you going to the same vet as Pipp?

I hope she continues to heal well!
