Hi to all! my name is Kayla and my bunny is Dusk. He is a 1 yr old black mini rex. He was recently adopted by us from a breeder. Instead of a baby,we decided for an "older" bunny to give a good home to. Just looking for some advice on how to handle an older rabbit? He seems very set back and shy...but it could be nerves? Thanks :):big wink:

Welcome! Great that you adopted an older bun.

Time and patience....don't give up :) sit, let him see and smell you without you forcing much. Im a fan of "ignoring" them until they see you are okay. Go slowly.

Let us know how things go! :)

Good for you, adopting an "older" bun! They need good homes too! Welcome to the forum  I bet he's just adjusting to his new home. Give him time. Most buns don't like being held anyway. I never pick my boy up...

In my opinion, this is an ideal age to adopt a rabbit. The hormone stage should be well past its peak & you should have him many more years. You don't have to introduce veggies or make the slow switch from alfalfa to timothy pellets.

I'm a fan of adopting a bun right around that age, too. Babies are super cute, but I appreciate the dignity buns get with age :)

I'd love to see some pictures!

And I agree with what everyone else says, the best thing you can do it let him out, sit on the floor, and ignore him. He can com up and sniff or nudge you, but try not to move quickly or rush to pet him or pick him up. Once he knows your safe, he might be more willing to be handled, but none of my buns like being picked up.

Welcome to RO! We would love to see pictures.

I lay on the floor and read to my buns. It really helps them get used to you in a non-threatning situation. I have a mini rex (castor) and he is a total clown, will do anything for a laugh.
