Neutering tomorrow...

Hello,

so my rabbit zentor is getting fixed tomorrow, and I was just wondering what things I need to know. I've read some stuff and I know to make sure they use the stiches, not staples. I also know that they can eat just fine before surgery. I was wondering if I should ask about the kind of pain meds and anasteshia (sp?). The place I'm going to has been around for a good while, and they said that they are fine with rabbit neuters (I'm mean they are charging me up the wall) so I'm expecting everything to be fine. BUT this is my first time with a rabbit, so I want to make sure I take all precausions.

Feed him right up in till you bring him in. Ask about Metacam after the Surgery to take home. Keep him quite for the next few days after surgery.

Been thru the spay/neuter thing many times. Most vets ask that pellets be removed the morning of surgery. Do not remove hay or water. Most vets still use isoflurane (a gas). It has been used safely for years. I have sedated rabbits that weighed less than 2ounces with thie anesthesia. The more upscale clinics are now using a new gas, Sevoflurane. It is quicker to work and the animal is quicker to rebound. More expensive than Iso but worth it if available. Not that it would be needed in this situation, but contrary to what is being published, injectables can be used safely. These injectables are valuable when doing longer duration surgeries or major dental work. Staples should never be used in a rabbit. There is really no need for sutures for a neuter. Some vets leave it open. I prefer the incision to be closed. I prefer surgical (tisuue)glue. As far as pain meds, Metacam is certainly better than nothing but is insufficient for post-op pain management. My preferred drug is Buprenorphine (Buprenex) but Tramadol will provide adequate pain control. We usually offer males up to three days of drugs post-op.

The place I'm going to is deffinatly expensive (220$ surgery and pain meds and 65$ for pre surgery health examination required) and in a "good part of town" so I think everything should be fine and clean. The lady I talked to when making the appointment said that they will give me pain meds to take home, but she didnt say which kind. so I guess I was curious. also while he's out of it I guess they are going to cut his nails if nessisary for free.

ra7751- Do they really leave it un sutured for neutures somtimes??? does it get infected easier this way?

Also one more note: How restricted should his movement be after surgery? and for how long?

so i just heard from the vet and i guess everything went fine. they used a glue for him and they are giving me a pain med that is in liquid form. so yeah, thats the update as of now. :]

So they gave him Meloxicam and the vet said to give him 1.5 mg/ml per day for 3 days. is enough for him? also they game him the sevoflurane anesthesia so thats good. all in all i think it all went well. :]

Glad everything went well and you got the nails trimmed for free!

If you're concerned about the dosage with the medication, I'd call your vet.

I think that's really high for a bunny unless your bunny is a Flemish Giant.

should i give him less medication? they weighted him and he is 2.85 lb. and he's a 6 month old netherland dwarf. they gave me a lot of extra also, she said that just to give him stuff for three days. is this ok?
