I have a Netherland Dwarf rabbit. She'll be 9 years old on Sunday. We noticed a reasonably large wound on her lower underbelly today. She's not fond of being picked up, so we rarely see her belly unless she's resting on her side, so I can't be sure how long the sore has been there. She doesn't seem to be in pain. She's still romping around her cage and eating. I put some antibiotic ointment on it and wrapped it in a clean strip of cotton. Here's a photo of the injury:

My question is if it looks like a random injury that will clean up or if it's more likely a growth that's indicative of cancer or something like that. If it'll heal on its own, I won't traumatize her with a trip to the vet. If it's something more serious, then I don't want to leave her to get worse. I know you can't say for sure, but an opinion would be appreciated.

The pic is really small so it's hard to tell the severity of the wound. Typically it would be very unusual for a rabbit to develop a wound on it's belly, so unless you think it is a scratch from something or there would be an explanation for a wound developing there, it would probably be best to have it checked by a vet, especially if it seems inflamed or infected at all. If you do see a vet, make sure it is an experienced rabbit vet.

I'm not sure why the image displayed in such a small size. The original picture is much larger. Thanks for vet links.

Ok, yeah, that doesn't look good at all. Definitely get it looked at by a vet asap.

Ooh, ouch. I cringed. Yeah that doesn't look like it'll heal on its own. Pack her off to the vet right away, hope it's nothing major!
