While getting Shadow's repeat prescription we also brought up Sapphire to get her checked out because she was in such a state when we got her the vet said she had some sort of mites/fleas, the name of the mite began with "S" I think, But I know she didn't catch this off my other rabbits, As there fur is in perfect condition and so is there skin, Where as Sapphire's skin is all flaky, I'm getting really annoyed with all the problems all the animals I'm getting in petmania are coming with, I just thought she was under weight and not looked after, But I have no regret in getting her, I love her in a special way. He treated her with a thing called "advent" or something like that it is licenced to treat Cat Fleas/Mites it is also registered to treat rabbits.

Was it Cheyletiella? And was she treated with Advantage?

Are you keeping her in strict quaratine to prevent it spreading to your others? Because that is the biggest risk with things like mites and fleas.

I am not sure how Advantage works, but I would also suggest treating your environment to kill any rogue ones that get off. I use a hutch and cage spray. I was about to say it works really well, but I've never actually had mites here, so I'm just presuming it works well.

Have you maybe thought about stopping buying rabbits from said place and maybe look for a place that sell healthier animals if you want anymore?

I feel for you Paul. When you have a lot of animals it is often one after another when it comes to problems. I hope she starts to improve soon.

Yeah it was Cheyletiella pronounced (shell ee ate a)? More then likely Advantage it was something beginning with "A". Yeah she has never been in contact with any of the other buns, I was actually planning on bonding her with Swyer and I was going to start soon, But Irishbunny really helped me with the idea to bring her to the vet, I am so glad she pushed me that little bit futher on the idea as I was thinking about it but wasn't pushed because it could have been alot dearer to sort out, if she got in contact with swyer. Well I was planning on stopping getting animals before I got her from petmania I just felt SO sorry for her, I had to do something so I took her home, But I will never buy from them again, When I found out Shadow had His Pasterella, I was really annoyed but this has taken the last slice, I'm planning on going in and complaining not like they will care.

You can act as a temporary host so you can potentially share the mites with the other rabbits, as can things like toys, dust pan and brush, etc. Basically there needs to be nothing that goes from her, to them without thorough cleaning, and you need to do her last.

You did the right thing by taking her to the vets :) and the right thing by delaying the bonding too.

I would suggest complaining, maybe not to the store, but to the Head Quarters, because its horrid they are selling rabbits in such poor conditions.

Crap I cleaned her first, But I used a antiseptic the tesco brand of Detol to clean the cage, and used a hard brush and pan, Would that kill them? Plus I've had her for like 3 weeks And cleaned her about 6 times, But I haven't noticed any skin prob on the others.

I would just watch the others for any signs of scratching, or dandruff and be very vigilant from now one. I used to wear binliners when dealing with my quaratined bunnies, because they are very easy to tear off and dispose of, and then any potential risk goes with them, which just left my arms to clean properly, as opposed to changes of clothing, etc.

Hopefully you'll get lucky and it won't have spread.

I had Summer come to me with what looked like Mites and I was really proud when they didn't spread. Turned out that she had dermatitis though, lol, which wouldn't spread, so if the mite treatment doesn't sort the problem be prepared to look at other options.

I actually have them apron things but I just don't use them, Wish I did now.

Try not to worry about what you have or haven't done, maybe just learn from it and go from here. We all make mistakes, but its how you deal with the consequences which is the most important part. :)

Maybe use those things from no on, until you are sure she is clear from it.

Usually a vet shouldn't mind writing outa script for meds as long as they have seen your animal and know exactly what is going on.

Then you can go to any vet and they should accept it and you should be able to make a purchase through them. Many vets now sell single doses of many meds. I know for me I couldn't drop 60 at one time......

So perhaps with a script you could buy single doses from another vet who sells them like that.

At my shelter we dose all incomers with a drop of Revolution on the nape of the neck. You should be able to get a script for that, as it is relatively well tolerated. It may be expensive or you have to buy a lot, but I'd give it to all of the bunnies that may potentially have been exposed just in case.

cheytiella doesn't respond to Advantage but does to ivermectin either given per injection for 3 dose spaced about 1 week apart or by careful dosing and applying it externally.
it seems as if I read somewhere that revolution is effective for this particular mite but the packaging doesn't indicate it. maybe I can find it somewhere.

Oh bummer and the vet charged me €27 to get the advantage applied and it doens't even effect cheytiella! bummer!

Sometimes I wonder about your vet Paul . Can you change vets?

If not print out the sheets that are in the link that plainly state that advantage won't work and go back and give them to him. Then ask for your money back..

Sorry about this
sounds like what I go through here...:(

There is another vet that sounds really good and is even cheaper it's just the fact that this vet is so close and convenient! I might actually Say it to him. And see will he give her Revolution. I wonder could I just find A supplier that just gives out this stuff. Can I get a license for this kind of stuff?

The thing is though the vet said that Advantage if that is what he used was licensed in France for use on rabbits?

I am only going by what i am reading on medi-rabbit

if Advantage was appllied you could wait and see if she starts to improve or go to to the vet close to you and just talk to him.

The vets should have reference books for this type of think. I think medi-rabbit say ivermectin but then again revolution may be finebutI am not sure.
There are many drugs used in the US that are that are notOK'"d for rabbits but are used anyway.by experienced vets
you also have to remember that you can't just keep giving one chemical after another on her as that isn' safe either
I don't know what Advent is and maybe that was applieded instead of advantage?
i will try to look up advent sometime today...
just hold on there; this is a lot to go through but in the end you will know exactly what to do next time...

Thanks so much, I just said Revolution because I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread:blushan:. Thanks for the support, If you turn out to be correct i'll have a word with the vet.

I probably mentioned Revolution, as they give it to all the bunnies at the shelter. I don't know much about which antiparasitics are better, especially between all the brands. I worry about ivermectin not working as well on an external parasite as on an internal parasite, which is what it's typically used for. But again, no experience with that here.

Well whatever the vet gave the rabbit seems to have worked because the bald patches have seem to have grown hair, Is this good?

Yes, that's great :) Hows the skin looking? dandruffy? sore? scabby? or just normal and growing hair?
