omg! i just reached home with a lot of new presents for Donut... :p and realised his food bowl was empty. just as i got the bag with pellets inside, there was a little maggot stringing at the top of the bag inside. (it's a ziplock bag kind of thing so it was just below the ziplock inside the bag). i tried searching for more in the bag.. but i didn't find any- but then again they're tiny so it's hard to find.. the bag is still 1/4 full and i don't have any other bag besides this. i dunno if i should give donut the pellets inside. can maggots go "in" the pellets??? should i just let him eat just hay and veggies tonight and get a new bag of pellets tomorrrow? help :?

I am not an expert on this but I would just make sure that Donut has a lot of hay and maybe a tiny bit extra veggies for now and wait on the pellets until tomorrow. I think that its better to be safe than sorry in a case like this!

:yeahthat:

I'd throw out the pellets.

Donut should be fine with extra hay and veggiesuntil you can get new feed.

I agree with JimD and Sabrina. Normally we don't recommend a rapid food change like that, but the possibility of eating these maggots makes me worry. I'm not too worried about the maggots themselves, because bunnies occasionally eat bugs without problems, and their stomach would probably kill them if the tooth grinding didn't. I'd be more worried about any pesticides and other bad chemicals the maggots might be carrying in their bodies.

Personally I'd throw out the pellets and get new ones, but you could freeze the pellets overnight. That should kill the maggots.

These are probably larvea from those little moths that inhabit grains. When the grains are processed, not all of the eggs die, but when conditions are right they hatch to start their life cycle.

I agree with everyone else, toss them out and get a new batch, hopefully from a different lot of pellets. Freezing the pellets should kill the eggs/larvea, but if they are hatching it might be a good guess that the pellets are older anyhow.

thanks for all the replies :D last night i gave donut a little bit of extra veggies and tons of hay. i'll be going down to get a new bag of pellets from the rabbit vet clinic/shop rather than my local pet shop- they're not that far apart anyways. :)

If you're worried about any bugs in your foods, I'd freeze it at least once. Same thing with flour and corn starch even - freeze it to keep bugs out.

I think your bun should be fine, though.
