Hi folks,

Nibbler has only been with us since Saturday, but he seems to have settled in very well. He LOVES being petted, and doesn't seem afraid of anything. I just have some questions about his behaviour and diet, as he's the first rabbit I've lived with.

He lives in the house, and is allowed to go everywhere except the bed rooms. He decided almost straight away that the area under the coffee table is his space, so we popped a towel underneath it, and don't invade this "space".

It seems to me that he spends a lot of time flopped out on the floor. Even at night he mostly just sits around, or lays on the carpet. He has spent some time charging around the house, but he mostly just lazes about. I wondered if this is normal for a bunny? I thought a rabbit might be a bit more active, and to be honest, I worry that he may be really bored or even depressed!

He does have things to play with...a phonebook to tear up (he has done this a little when he first arrived), plenty of toilet rolls, some balls to roll, light boxes to drag or throw, etc. He doesn't really play with any of these things, and I don't know if he's just not very playful/active by nature, or if he doesn't find them stimulating enough.

He gave me a bit of a fright today. He was laying around, as usual, then suddenly sprang up and lunged at his litterbox! He attacked it like he wanted to destroy it, headbutting it, leaping into it and chewing on the edges, digging at it. He did all of this like he was in a frenzy! He did it several times throughout the day, too. Was this him playing? Or was he expressing some sort of frustration caused by boredom, stress, etc?

I did wonder if he was lethargic or moody because his diet wasn't the best? He has constant access to fresh oaten hay, and has a handful of pellets each day. He gets two different kinds of leafy greens (eg, Bok Choy and parsley) along with a treat like a carrot, apple, little bit of banana. Is this suitable for a very big 4 year old bunny?

...and he's dragging his litterbox around as I type :rollseyes

I'm not a bunny psychologist, but if a human suddenly developed a horrible loathing for the toilet, and physically abused it, I'd be worried :p

So, does it sound like Nibbler is bored, or needing something I'm not giving him? Or am I being a worry wart?

Here's a photo of him doing what he does best, just for the sake of it!

OH! He is gorgeous! What a precious pic of him!

I'm sorry.. if its not my rabbit i just dont understand bunny language, i've only mastered my rabbits signs lol.

I would think that as long as he is eating good and pooping/peeing normal that everything is okay, but this is just my assumption.

I hope others with more knowledge will chime in.

First, cute picture! He looks pretty content to me. :) My Max usually just lays around. And most of the time she'll run back to her cage for her 5 hour naps. LOL I think each bunny is different, just like people. My daughter runs for the enjoyment, I'm more of a "run if something is chasing me" type of person. LOL As long as he's eating and his poo is normal, then I wouldn't worry too much. As for the litter box...maybe he was telling it, "I'll use you, but also abuse you!" haha

Thanks for the reassurance :)

I THINK his poo is normal...there's a lot of it XD There have been a couple of very big ones, is that normal?

He seems to eat quite a lot, so I'm happy with his appetite, but he doesn't appear to drink much. The first day or two he was here, he didn't seem to drink at all until he was confined to a hutch, so I know he's drinking now. However, his water bowl isn't noticeably depleted when I get home from a day at work. How much does a bunny generally drink in a day? Leafy greens tend to be a bit watery, so maybe that's helping him keep hydrated.

If you feed him veggies then yes, he is staying hydrated with them. What I do is soak them with water before I serve them, gives me a chance to rinse them off and provide more water. Bugsy rarely drinks water because of his water soaked veggies :)

:inlove: such a cutie!

I have found that lops tend to me lazier than most. There's just something laid back about the lopies, with the possible exception of the English, who seem to enjoy getting into things.

If you are trying to entice more play, I would suggest a baby rattle made from hard plastic. At least all my kids love to make as much noise as possible when they play. Anything with bells is also popular.
