Soldan's, a local pet store and supply chain, uses this product for all their small animal's litter and bedding:

http://www.jpmccrumb.com/pellets.php

I bought some to try it out. It doesn't smell very strong but when I leave the room I swear I can feel it in my lungs. I can't feel any oily residue though. I'm going to call the company tomorrow and ask if the pellets are kiln dried. Curiously, their shaved version says it's kiln dried.

Also, http://www.rabbit.org/journal/1/liver-disease.html led me to believe that all pelleted wood products are kiln dried.

I'll call them tomorrow and post what they say. If the pellets aren't kiln dried I'll go back and buy the shavings. This stuff is so cheap compared to Yesterday's News.

Just found out that they're kiln dried. Yay! Cheap litter!

I think all the pine stuff I felt in my lungs was dust from when I emptied the entire bag into a container.

Hmmm... could have sworn I replied to this post. :)

I use big 40-lb bags of 'horse stall' litter when I can't get out to get wood stove pellets, but I do make sure I use them in well ventilated areas and add just a layer on the bottom of the litter box with the rest made up of hay fines.

I know the manufacturing process is supposed to take away the toxic nature that causes the liver issues, but they still smell a little too fragrant for my liking, and it's the aroma that's supposed to be the problem.

So I still use caution.

Thanks so much for checking into that! I do feel safer with it than I did. ;)
