Hi

My bunny Oscar (the girl) has startee to behave really weirdly. Last night I noticed her ears where warmer than usual, when she was grooming herself on her tummy it was as if she was trying to pull something out of her fur - it was very unusal and hard to explain, of course every time I tried to record her she stopped doing it.
Should I be worried?
Im considerinh taking her to the vet tomorroe to reassure myself but I dont want the vet to think im being dramatic

Any suggestions or advice?

Paying excessive attention to her belly could indicate that something in that area is making her feel uncomfortable or may be painful. Is there anything off with her eating and pooping(normal looking and normal amounts)? Does her pee look normal? Have you noticed anything else out of the ordinary, any signs of discomfort or pain( belly pressing, changing positions frequently, sitting hunched up for long periods, tooth grinding, eye squinting)? It's possible with the peeing accidents occurring, that she could have a UTI or bladder sludge issue. I would say that just with the unusual loss of litter habits, that taking her to the vet to get checked asap, would be a good idea.

Thanks for the link bun my Oscar is having a few issues and I think I have the answer from the link so he's off to the vet on Monday hope your Oscar is ok too Danielle I never worry about going to vet that's what they are their for :energizerbunny:

I took Oscar to the vets today. Good and bad news. Good news is im not being dramatic and I know my rabbit well :). Bad news is Oscar is sick, she has an STI which is confusing because she is spayed and they did blood tests before her operation and she was clear and shes never been around any other rabbit or animals. Although its not uncommon its still rare. Shes on medication and we have review next Sunday :)

I'm glad the vet found what was wrong with your bun. The antibiotics should get it cleared up soon. Rabbit syphilis can lie dormant, so your rabbit could have picked up the bacteria a while ago, and it's just now emerged. Did your rabbit have any of the usual crusting or swelling around the eyes, nose, or vent area, or was the discomfort and urinary problems the only indication you had? Just curious.

You can read more about it here if you are interested.

Jemm, best of luck at the vets. I hope they're able to find out what the issue is with your rabbit and get your bun feeling better.

No there was nothing around the eyes at all ..... it was when we got to the vets that we seen her private area was all red and inflamed, poor baby must have been in so much pain! Could cry at the thought of it

I noticed on your other thread, that you mention giving your bun some nasty tasting meds. I'm just wondering what med your vet prescribed and if your vet actually said that your bun had syphilis?

The vet said that it was sifilies(sp?) And gave me Baytril to try for a week we have a review in 1 week if its not clesred up any at all there will be more tests

I'm just a bit confused why your vet would be prescribing baytril for syphilis. I've only ever heard of it being treated with penicillin injections and thought that was the only antibiotic effective against it. From what I've read, other antibiotics may alleviate symptoms but once stopped the symptoms will reemerge. Now if your rabbit had a UTI, then baytril is something that might be prescribed. So maybe there is some confusion. This might be something you want to clarify with your vet. Is your vet very experienced with rabbits?

I could be wrong, but I thought it is something that would be good to check on.

You can see in these links and the previous one I shared, that penicillin is what is normally used for it.

My vet is one of the top vets in Ireland specialising in rabbits.
She said that penecillian would be the next course of action if the Baytril didnt help at all. She wants to try things before penicilian as theres a higher risk of death with it. She said looking at her it appears to be an STI but scrappings will be taken next Sunday

She was at the vet yesterday for a check up but I forgot to mention the fainting to her so I called into the vets this morning and showed her a video of oscar fainting. She said to keep an extra careful eye on her and to stop her medicine as soon as the lesions has cleared up but because she couldnt see her heary rate or behaviour before fainting she can really say
